My mother was of that era. About ten years ago the restaurant table next to us included a young woman in the old whites and cap. Mom was going on about how inappropriate it was to wear the cap outside the hospital until I told her they were actors from the theater next door. That made it worse. My mother was a nurse. I remember in the 70s always seeing her nurse's cap, starched to a tee and plastered on the front of the washing machine to dry flat. It was a required part of the uniform. By the time she retired in the late 90s nurses' caps had all but disappeared. Uniforms evolve and standards change. It didn't affect the professionalism of the nurses.
Don't get me started. I'm a defensive tactics instructor even at my age..... One of the "big" guys said that won't work on me. I took him to the ground. He came over later and said "what should I do if I wind up on the ground with a perp?" I said lay on him and call for backup because you're too fat to get back up. Our official hat is a black stetson but a baseball cap or watch cap is also OK. Chief is constantly yelling at guys for sloppy appearance. But the pay stinks and the job is thankless. It ceased when grooming standards went away for the most part.
Have you seen the scruffy beards that are now allowed in the military?
Then there's LE. With all the tattoos, beards and grossly overweight folks, it makes me wonder if there are grooming standards much less physical fitness standards.
Everything gets sloppy when there's no pride.
I'm just a casual observer, my opinion is meaningless.
Guarding the shampoo and conditioner. Some of that stuff is expensive.
I find it both humorous and intimidating to see all these young cops with a shaved head.
When you're a Five Star General you can get away with things.

There was a time when ribbons were not handed out for everything under the sun.Agreed. Not very apropos for the rank. The 9 ribbons is pretty sad for a person of that age, too.
We have no idea what that person's career specialty was and that plays a large role in how many times you're awarded. The 9 ribbons is pretty sad for a person of that age, too.
MacArthur was a copycat. Idiot First Class Admiral Sir David Beatty set the standard before that. Note hands in pockets.

I'm OK with tats and light beards, but man buns look gay to me. When I started as a rookie in 1969 long hair, tats, beards, and even mustaches were not allowed. WWII Military grooming was the only style allowed.
