My wife's carry gun is a Model 31-1 that numbers to 1981 with a non pinned barrel. I gave $200 for this about eight years ago..grips number to the frame. What would be the value now and when did S&W stop pinning their barrels. Here's a couple of pics. Thanking you in advance. Rich

According to the SCSW the pinned barrel was deleted in 1982.

Since the value and prices of most revolvers have gone skyward I had to check completed auctions.

My first thought was $400-$500 easy in my area for a gun in nice condition.

Checking GB I see that they have been bought at $425-$599.
depending on condition and if box and tools are still present.

I hope this helps and I'm sure that there will be more values given.

Your 31-1 is a somewhat desirable gun, as many are having the chambers reamed for 32 H&R Mag and then have a very viable self defense gun that holds 6 rounds. Most clean ones I have seen lately are bringing $500 to $600. Your gun must have been a very early one for the non-pinned barrel change.

That 1980-1982 transitional phase contains both pinned and not pinned. In 1980 they seem to be all pinned. By 1982 the pin was about gone. I bought a lot of new Smiths during that period. They came both ways. I guess you have to consider that in late 1982 you might have bought a gun that was manufactured earlier but didn't ship to your dealer until much later (old inventory). This could result in a gun bought new from the factory (or distributor) for Christmas 1982 that was still pinned. You have a neat little gun. I am pleased to see the estimates as to its market value today. Just like you, I bought a couple a few years back just because I like them. Like you, I didn't pay much.

SCS&W says S&W made the Model 31 in 31-2 and 31-3 variants with the standard J frame changes.

I've never seen one anything higher than a 31-1.

Has anyone else?
