I know I said that I wasn't going to be buying anymore guns for a bit but I'm weak I tell you ;) .I just put a deposit on a
98 % - 99% 4" blue model 31-1 .32 sw cal. serial in the H341XX range no box or tools . The asking price was $399.00 I've never seen one so it must not be that common . So is that a fair price?????

#31-1's are common at my house, I have two of them. If the one you are buying is a four digit serial number it was made 1969-1970. Prices vary on the .32's, some folks wouldn't touch one. $150.00 for a nasty one needing re-blueing to $350.00 or more for a nice example with box and papers. The .32 S&W Long is a accurate cartridge with mild recoil. You will not find a phlethora of factory loads for it, usually LRN and WC at around 100 grains. It can be handloaded, cheaply and effectively.

31-1 value

I have two LNIB Model 31-1's in 3 inch barrel. They both cost more than the asking price of the one you are looking at. I like them because they are accurate, have low recoil and low noise. They also are well balanced, and good looking. Even my novice shooter wife found one easy to handle. The asking price seems fair to me, considering you are dealing with a commercial enterprise. I don't know how rare they are, but I've only seen two this year at gun shows, and bought them both. Good luck on your decision.

Model 31-1

Here is model 31-1, S.B., 2", S/N H120XXX. Original condition as left the factory in 1978.
Yours is a decent price for a 98% gun.

Here's one I once owned that was made during the same time frame. Mine's finish made it just a shooter but man . . . it sure was fun to shoot it.

I missed it a bunch and recently picked up a new (to me) Model 1903 Hand Ejector, 5th Change in .32 S&W Long to replace it.

The 31-1 is a nice revolver, and the .32 S&W Long can post some impressive ballistics when properly handloaded. I've hit 910 fps out of a 4" barrel with 95 gr LSWC. Here are my pair of 31-1s, a 1971 and a 1976. The 1976 (bottom) has grips numbered to the gun and was unfired. I got it for $300 about 3 years ago:
