A friend has a pretty nice M36-1 Chief's Special, round butt 3" nickel finish. She said she's had it many years but doesn't shoot much any more and is thinking about parting with it. SCSW says 1977 for the mfg. year by the SN. I cleaned it up and waxed it, brought out a very nice shine and a few light scratches that show up depending on the light, but the nickel is intact, and no rust. Lock-up is nice and tight, no end shake at all, action is smooth. Stocks are numbered to the gun. Not sure if she has box, etc. but I don't think so.

What would be a fair price to offer? I'm not all that familiar with other than K or N frames, this would be my first S&W in a J frame.

A serial number of J5xxxxx to J6xxxxx would put it around '77.

Based on the scratches you show on the side plate I'd say it's in
the $450 neighborhood.

One guy's thought.
It's in the J610xxx range.
Your value is about what I was thinking. I'm sure the owner didn't pay but about half that for it, as long as she's had it.

I really have no need for it and a J frame anything has not been on my wish list, but it's a rather cute little gun and I thought it might be a nice one to turn over or trade up to something I do want. Just depends on how much she wants for it.

Thanks for the reply.

Last year I bought from gun shop my 36-1 3" SB
200€ (In Finland)

I searched for many years and finally found it

Finland has a stupid gun law.
36-1 3" round butt is a pocket gun, terribly dangerous to public safety because it is easy to conceal.
36-1 3" square butt is a regular revolver, for which you can get permission from the police :)

CCW is prohibited here. Even an off-duty police officer is not allowed to carry a gun.

A pocket gun in our commie gun law:
A pocket gun refers to a firearm, but not a gas gun, that fits in a rectangular box with internal dimensions of 130 x 180 millimeters, placed in such a way that the barrel and butt of the weapon are parallel to the plane of the bottom of the box.

(5,12"x7,09")
In practice, only an approved gun collector can obtain a permit to own a pocket gun.
The neighboring country Estonia allows CCW for its citizens, but in Finland the politicians are afraid of the people?

That's a great revolver Hair Trigger.Ive got 2, the last one I bought from a retired Cincinnati PD officer and cost me $425.00 .The one before that my brother got me for about 525.00.Like Rubone says "jump on it if you can".Mine are worth everything they cost. They are a pleasure to shoot and I include both in my leosa ccw rotation.Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have a round butt 3", nickle with a tapered barrel. I bought it before handgun prices went sky high but I son't remember what I paid for it. Does $300.00 sound right?

Just my opinion: If you don't have a J, you DO need one.

I carried 36-1 as my EDC for years. Blued 3" steel frame, what's not to love. I only set it aside for the hammerless DOA and tritium sights of a 640 P.
