Hello all,

Just picked up a model 36 in 3". Was wondering if anyone could give me an approx. date on her. Grips are numbered to the gun and came with correct box with all papers (just not numbered to gun). Sorry pics are not the best.

Thanks!
Chris

That's a beaut. A square butt 3 inch J Frame is a great shooter and that's a terrific example.

J Frames in that SN range are a bit tough to pin down.

According to the SCSW 1957 ended with SN 125000 and 1962 ended with SN 295000, so it's likely somewhere between '58 and '62. With that number possibly toward the early part of the range, but only a letter would pin that down.

I agree with Cooter Brown . . . terrific revolver.

For reference . . . s/n 151203 shipped in April 1959.

Wow, that's screamer!

1452xx……….shipped October 1958 and
1463xx……..shipped December 1958

So that pretty much pinpoints the date for yours.

Any date stamp under the left grip on the grip frame near the toe?

I love those 3" tapered standard barreled Chiefs. My '71 vintage sq butt, 3rd down on the right:

What a bunch of sexy guns! Love 'em. Not sure what the date stamp is... There is the numbers "5445" and a "V" stamped there, thats all...

Thank you!

Sorry I wasn't clearer, a 3 or 4 digit # would indicate a month and year date if the gun had gone back to the factory for re-finish or repair. Obviously it hasn't. 5445 is a 'soft assembly' # from the factory and matches the one on the yoke in the yoke hinge and under the sideplate.

V is an inspector or assembler stamp.
