Hello,

Stopped by the local store today and had a look in the used revolver counter.

There were two nickel 36's, both with 3" barrels.
One had the J-Frame checkered oversized grips and a heavy barrel.
One had the standard checkered square butt grips and a pencil barrel.
Both are pinned barrels without diamond grips. No flat latches or anything.

If they were both similar condition, which would be more desireable and why?

Both had price tags under $400. Both had very nice looking nickel and slightly worn grips.

Thanks

:) Don't see any thing about a 3" pencil barrel. I know
the nickel guns are more rare than blue ones. The price
sounds good on either gun. Don

All else being equal , the heavy barrel was made in less numbers - so worth slightly more.

I was in a similar situation a month or so ago but there was one 36-1 HB and a M36 2" with box and papers. I went with the 3" HB because I had never seen one and I already had a 2" M36.

I bought a 36 no-dash 3" round butt a couple of weeks ago for $375. The barrel has a very slight taper to it which is more apparent when the gun is looked at from the front than from the sides. Does that make it a pencil barrel? Mine was manufactured in the 1973-74 time frame. Did they even make heavy barrel versions back then?

I wrote down the serial numbers...
The HB was made in 1975.

The other one had a 5J92XX serial number. I am having trouble finding out what that translates to. Can anyone help with that?

1971-1972

If you plan on using the gun, I'd go with the heavy barrel/oversize grip combo. That would make for a fun little shooter.

Actually, it is the 3' pencil barrel that is the least common, that has been discussed on the forum a few times before...
