I found this today at a local pawn for $365. Probably one of the nicer specimens I've seen out in the wild. And the best price I've seen.

Back in 91', a model 36 was one of the first off-duty guns I ever bought. Foolishly traded it away shortly thereafter. So, I've wanted a 36 round butt for a while.

This one has a serial number of 709xxx. So, I'm guessing 1968?

Anyone have a history letter in that serial number range (Cowboy)?

Thanks.

That's a nice looking Chiefs Special at a terrific price. Congrats!

Peering into the database I don't see any near your new one with
a letter, but a number of nearby examples shipped in February and
March 1969 so I'd say that's a close guess.

786544 is the highest known Chiefs Special in the original Chiefs
serial series, and the new range, which began with J1, began
shipping in summer 1969.

Thanks for the info. 69’ would be a birth year gun. I’ve also got 7860xx which is marked 36, but is a .32 S&W Long. Sounds like that’s definitely a 69’ gun. I’d like to letter it to see if it left S&W as a .32, or did someone convert a 36? Just haven’t wanted to spend the $$.
