This is in reference to a potential purchase and I am having a hard time with the J Frame Section in the SCSW both 2nd and
3rd editions.

I am told that the Model 36 No Dash, I am about to purchase has a SN of 1J01414. That it's from the early 70's but, everything I read tells me it's possibly in somewhere with the "Floating J" thing that S&W did.

It is a nickel plated, Round But J Frame. Appears to be a 3 screw model (no side plate top screw), also does not look to be a pinned barrel which, leads me to believe that it is from the early 80's and not the 70's

I don't own the gun yet so, I am reluctant to post pictures but, I can possibly PM them to you if sincerely interested in helping figure this out before I make a mistake. I am good at that, lol.

You can't make a mistake unless it's broken or you pay too much for it!!!! :D

***GRJ***

Although, I am inclined to agree. I am trying to make sure I don't buy it too early, or purchase something that is not what it is advertised as being, LOL.

I've carried a Model 36 no -dash for thirty years and practice with it often. I pull the trigger and it goes bang. Never fails. There are lighter weapons but I like the way the weight tames the recoil. It's my EDC.

Depends on what you want to do with it. If it's your first J frame and you shoot .38 at 158 gr. you might actually like it but get some easy going rubber grips for your hands sake.

I think you are correct 1JO1414 in a model 36 should be around 1983. Ya never know what comes flying out the back door of that factory. Got Box & papers ?

No box, no papers. Claimed to be inherited from his father. I am just erring on the side of caution.

Someone told me that the sn means it was like number 1414 from 2 million made in 1970 of something like that. I don't believe it but there are people on this forum that know a lot more than I do about them.

I backed off and decided against it.
