Model 36 no dash

Hi this is my first post on here. Lookin for a lil help. I've found a Model 36 no dash serial number 3707xx. This gun has been shot or carried very little. Does have initials professionally engraved in it "doesn't really bother me". Just curious on the year and if $350 otd is reasonable. The gun is very clean and locks up tight. The line on the cylinder that wares is very light

Besides the initials, it looks like the lettering on the barrel was filled in with gold paint? I'm not too wild about either "upgrade", but $350 for a pinned-barrel Chief in good shape is still a good price. You can always clean out that paint & have a replacement side plate fitted if it bugs you.
Is that Chief a square butt or round butt? Hard to tell with those big target "round to square" target grips on it. I'd recommend some smaller grips if it's gonna be a carry gun. Round butt boots are plentiful, but sq butt boots are pretty scarce. BTW I've got a set of each for sale on the accessories/misc forum.

I will check out your grips, I do plan on changing them. It is round butt. I was told early to mid sixties. Seem right?

Yeah, early to mid-60s is about right:

1962 = starts at 295000
1969 = ends at 786544

I don't mind the initials at all. I think it looks like a good deal if you aren't planning on turning it right around in hope of a profit. Fine little carry gun.

Ya, the initials don't bother me. A lil character, maybe a story behind it. Not gonna resell, just really like the older S&W revolvers. Thx also for the info on approx age. I think I'm gonna get some smaller grips like the ones on my 317 and make it my carry. I'll find some standard pressure .38 jhp and call it good. I find these to be an attractive, comfortable, and very well built revolver. I'm sure I'm correct in assuming anything but a standard pressure load would be a bad idea? Could be wrong

That's a good price -- grab it! If you don't like it, you can sell it for more than that.

That's a nice price for a model 36 in that shape. Like you said, the engraving gives it a little more character and a lost story to boot. Those grips do need to go, unless to have size 20 hands.

Your 36 will handle just about any 38 load including +P. You probably won't want to shoot too many, kicks a little.

I'm the other way around, I much prefer the round butt-- it's a better fit in my hand, plus the SB points high for me. The exception MIGHT be a sq butt on a 36-1, it seems a better match for the 3" heavy barrel.
