I've got a clean looking model 36 (no dash) on its way from gunbroker, and I noticed on the pics it has a slightly bobbed hammer (maybe 5 mm removed), and while waiting for it to arrive found a replacement hammer assembly on eBay, as I would like to replace it to a full hammer.

I've read a few differing opinions, most recommending changing the sear from the old hammer to the new assembly, and only a few saying it could work simply as a drop in. While I plan on inspecting them closely, and perhaps dropping in the new one to see how it works, I will likely change the sear to maximize consistency.

Just wanted to clarify the best order of operations in doing so. Should I remove the sear spring first, pop out the pin, then as I've read in another post using a bobby pin to compress the spring to the old sear, and seat them together into the new hammer assembly, and while holding them in place tap in the pin? Or remove the spring, change the sear, and insert the spring last and separately?

Much appreciate your guidance and experience.

I don't thing you can get the spring out or in with the sear and pin in place. But I would try the hammer as is before I changed the DA sear. I may well work fine and it is easier to install a complete hammer than fiddle with the sear.

I was really hoping someone would say that! I will probably just start there. What should I look for after dropping in the new hammer assembly that will indicate I need to consider swapping the sears?

Either trigger binding as you pull it or the trigger cycles the cylinder butt the hammer doesn't move.

The DA sear is engaged by the trigger and cocks the hammer most of the way. To long and it it will bind.
