I recently picked up this model 36 other other day at a good price. Was cleaning it and looking it over and noticed the serial number stamping is not as clean as my other smiths. Was wondering if this is normal and if so approximate date. Thank you

...stamped numbers do look a little strange...uneven sizes...spacing...and a little out of line...I own J864xx from 1970...serial on mine is very even and uniform...

It is not in the factory font and size so I would not be surprised if it was restamped. Are the stocks original and slightly longer than the grip frame? That would indicate metal may have been removed.

Well, this one goes all the way back to 1969. Of all the machines S&W had back then we know at least one did not have to be all that precise -- the serial number stamper. After all these years the number is still readable.

Yes the grips are numbered to the frame. I have more photos, I just can't figure out how to post them all in one post
