I have a model 37 with the same configuration and reached the same conclusion. Serial on mine is 533XXX so your's is on the earlier end.
Nice looking gun, does the box match it?

Based on the following three 36-1 ship dates I'd say 488xxx was shipped in 1967.

456212 shipped in September 1966
457962 shipped in January 1967
458810 shipped in December 1966

The box, which came with it today, does not match it. The box is for a round butt and is not serial numbered. The gun is 36 no dash.

I have one like that. Mine is from 1971-72 and I carry it regularly.
I'm a big fan of it. Good shooter. Not as much fun as my K frames, but a great little carry piece.

I have Model 36 serial number 540694. The grips are numbered to the gun and are not diamonds. I'm assuming mid to late 67?

I have 545731 with matching, no-diamond grips. It shipped in July '67.

Based on others in my data base I'd guess yours to have shipped in the spring of '67, but that seemed to be a very hit 'n' miss time for Chiefs to ship -- anything from '66 to '68 within 20,000 numbers of yours, plus and minus.
