My buddy just picked up this Model 36 no dash for $250.
Looks to be fired little. Perhaps a night stand gun.

Serial number is: 53964x

Can anyone date it for us ?

Sounds like the mid 60's, 1965 or thereabouts by the Standard Catalog of S&W. NICE buy for that money!

No kidding! Nice gun for a great price! I just got mine recently in about the same condition for $300. But I got a holster and some fancy grips with mine. No papers or box though. Any chance you got papers or box with yours?

Mine is #442XXX and dated to 65-67, so I would think yours would be about the same - towards the end of that time frame I would think since its almost 120,000 serial numbers higher. On the other hand I've seen posts around here that indicate that they didn't always ship out in serial number/production order....

Fantastic deal on a great gun.

My uncle was a career man (32 years) in the Army; WWII, Korea and VNx3. When he was home after the first tour in VN my dad made him a shoulder holster for a 36 just like that. I always lusted after that gun and holster.

I took the stocks off to clean the gun for him and those too are stamped with the same serial # 53964x with no "J" prefix, so the stocks pictured are original to the gun. So which is it, a 1960's gun, or a 1977 gun ?

In my experience, the grips won't necesarily have the J included with the s/n, but the gun certainly will. If there's no j in the s/n on the gun butt, it's a 1960's gun. It must have just missed having diamond magnas, which went away in 1968. That Chif looks to be in great shape, your buddy really scored at $250. The holster was just frosting on the cake. You might wanna post a photo of the holster too, just in case it's something kinda special-- ya just never know!

Going by the info in SCSW without a "J" prefix it's a 60s era. It lists the last serial number without a J as 786544 in 1969. I'd say that your friend got a screaming deal.

I'm no expert but the SN, no diamond magnas and no flat latch means '68ish.

Ask your bud if he wants to make a quick 50 bucks cash and sell that thing?!?!?!?!
