I'm a new member and relatively new to handguns. Recently received a .38 Special from my wife's grandfather after he passed away and was curious to find more info about it. It is a hand ejector, fixed sight, 3 screw revolver. Serial # 48J807 with a 3" barrel. It is in great shape and shoots very well. Any info appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

Welcome to the FORUM!! I wonder who is the newest member this year? You will enjoy that 36. I have one with a square butt from 1957. You did not mention if yours was a round, or square butt. Regardless, the 3" works much better for me than the 2" I do not have the book of numbers, but someone will give you that info. Post pics when you can. Happy New Year! Bob

Congradulations on the new to you J frame. I recently picked up one too; they are great little shooters. Post some pics.

I'm going to say yours may be from the early 1970s. However, those "J" serial numbers can be very confusing, what with the wandering J. Maybe someone with a nearby SN which has been lettered will show up to give a better dating. Those with the 3" barrel are more desirable.

Thanks for the replies. It has a rounded butt. Here are a couple of pics.

Alan,
That's a square butt.

The roving J series dates to 1971-72.

Here is a photo of two S&W 36's (J frames), one a square butt and the other a round butt.

Oh, ok. I see the difference. It's much more accurate than my Glock

You probably just hit better with the S&W than you do the Glock. Glocks are not for everyone, but they are accurate and reliable handguns.

My tiny adult daughter shot this group two years ago with my Glock 17, which was pretty big for her hands.

She did a bit better with my S&W 65-3, which fit her better.

You're right, I just need to spend more time with the glock. I like it really well, just haven't spent much time at the range with it. It is a 19. I was just amazed at how well this revolver shoots
