Model 37 question

I will be picking up a new to me S&W model 37 (SN# J558xxx) this Sunday from the FFL after my 10 day wait, man it's been a long 10 days. It will be my HD gun and I had a question that I need help with. I dont know all the correct terminology but here it is; is there a bar between the firing pin and the primer like newer revolvers that would stop a accidental/ negligent discharge if the hammer was hit in any way? I know some use a snap cap on the top of the cylinder to avoid the firearm discharging if dropped. Thanks for the help, soon I will be up to speed.

Yes there is that vital safety feature . . . and since about WWII also!

This is the photo of a Model 36 (the twin to your Model 37 but with a steel frame), that I'd taken apart to clean out the original gunk. Just in front of the hammer's front face is a long, black vertical bar. It is called the "Hammer Block." This piece absolutely blocks the hammer's firing pin nose from even touching the primer!

When the gun is cocked to fire, this bar drops down to allow the hammer to come forward and hit the primer but when you back off of the trigger the bar rises back into place.

This system is tried and proven for generations now. Congratulations on your new purchase. My own Model 37 is my "always" CCW firearm. I love it and you will too!

Tom, thank you very much for the information and picture. This model 37 was thrown in a deal to even up a trade, i'll tell you I think I am liking it more than the other gun that came with it (Glock 19).

Here's my "always" M37 . . . and what a comfortable "stealth" revolver it is!

I removed the original stocks for safekeeping and put on Elk stags for beauty and durability . . . and added a Tyler T-grip for that perfect "hold" and easy of shooting. It's a really cool gun!
