Just south of St. Louis,
Found a model 38 (no dash) at a gun show today and it just called out to me. It has a pinned barrel but the chambers are not recessed. It is wearing Hogue grips and I would say it is in "good" condition as there is a fair amount of holster wear on the edges. The serial number looks a little different than what I am used to seeing - 298JXX. Can anyone tell me what year it was made in? The "out the door price" with taxes was $350 so maybe I paid a little too much but it sure is cute. I'm anxious to see what it will do at the range. Thanks for any assistance!

Not to worry about the recessed chambers. The 38s were not recessed. I don't have my SCSW handy but it seems you have a "floating J" serial number and if I recall correctly (which is doubtful) these numbers were from around 1972. I'm sure someone will be along to give you a better estimate of date.

You got what I consider to be the best pocket pistol ever made.

You also got a good deal!

If you can find appropriate magnas for your gun, add a Tyler t to realize the best in this gun.

Congratulations.

Haven't been able to date yet but it seems you did well. The 4th Edition of the Catalog list the model 38 at $325 for good to $475 for very good. OK, maybe I can help some with the date: 1971-72, 1J1 - 999J99. From your serial number I can only guess at 1971.
