Looking at the model 39 is this a good pistol? I have Revolvers but no S&W autos. I like the looks and size of the the 39 need opinions. Thanks Gus

I've had a couple of 39's that I traded off for one reason or the other. I wish I hadn't now, but at the time it seemed like a good idea. Mine were both the -2 models, which I understand to be be the "improved" model. The earlier ones had trouble feeding HP ammo I've been told. The -2 model corrected this. I didn't have any problems with either of mine. Just got "new gun fever" and traded them off. Dumb.

I have a 39 and it is one of the most accuate semi-autos I have ever shot. It also fits well in my hand.

Like you, I am am more into revolvers, but this one was hard to pass up some ten years ago, since it came LNIB. If it's a good price, take it home. You will really enjoy shooting it.

The original model 39 (not many of them around) can be fussy with hollow point ammo, but a skilled gunsmith can polish the ramp and correct the problem without butchering the ramp angle.

The 39-2 series is very hollow point friendly, and so are all of the succeeding 39 type pistols. Any of the Smiths with the same basic design work well.

Make sure the pistol comes with at least two magazines without damaged baseplates (people trying to take the mag apart) and the base plates must have "S & W" stamped on them. Accept no substitutes.

The newer 39 type pistols like the 908, CS9, etc. are very good also. The 439 with the shields on the rear sight is not as easy to aim, but that should not be a deal stopper.

The de-cocker is an excellent safety device because it allows one to load and unload the pistol without that alarming hammer cocked mode.

Great Gun!

I've had a couple over the years. Loved them and regret selling them.

I'm no expert but, from what I've gathered, the M39 had a wider extractor that tended to break. The M39-2 has a narrower extractor which fixed the breakage problem. Both my guns were -2s and I never had any problems.

Ahhh yes, gone are the days' of 1974 when the M39 was winning the hearts of detectives on my department. I was restricted to my trusty dusty Model-28 with Remington SCW's and Dade speed loaders. Later, I purchased an ASP M39 and it was a beauty. However, the soft aluminum frame didn't hold up all that well due to galling from the slide, but it was still pretty nice. I ended up selling it and moved on to something else, after something else, etc...

The Mod 39 is a great pistol. These are very comfortable and accurate pistols. I have a Mod 39 and a 39-2. I have not had a problem with the no dash model, but I still shoot the -2 more often, since it has seen more use. You won't regret buying a Mod 39.

I own three 39-2's and would only echo all that has been said about them. My suggestion would be to get one as quickly as possible and see for yourself why many of us are so enthusiastic about them! You will not be disappointed.....

I have had several 39'w and still own a -2. It is reliable as sunrise and as accurate as most 9mm autos. It has an excellent feel and points well. The 39 has the same frame shape as the 52 target gun and I think that is evident.
As for utility, I was able to train and qualify my "non-shooter" wife for a CHL using the 39: she cleaned the targets...
Understanding that the 39 has an alloy frame means using good judgement in loads. Stay with factory NON +P and you'll have the pistol a very long time.
Good luck
Al

Model 39

Thanks for the feedback I was afraid you all were going to say things like this. Now I'll have to fanagle some gun money from the better half. Gus

I think the 39 - 39-2 are the best feeling handguns in history.Plus they shoot great!

You won't go wrong with buying one. I have been carrying my Model 39-2 clone (Stainless after market frame with 39 slide and parts). It's heavier than an original 39-2 but very accurate. I regret selling my 39-2 years ago and am looking for another one.

I purchased my first Model 39-2 last year. Enjoyed it so much I purchased a 539 and 639. Have to say that it is my favorite next to my Les Baer Premier 2. It fits better than anything else (I have my fair share) and always goes to the range with me.

I am always recommending them and am always looking for another for my collection. About $350.00 in California.

Got one!!

Well I picked up a 39-2 this week got it on gunbroker for $275 I did not think that was a bad price bluing is a bit rough on the slide but other than that it's okay will try and shoot it tonight to see how it shoots. I need a manual for it I asked S&W for one but I do not know if they can send me one any ideas on getting one? Gus
