I have one in nickel and I LOVE it. Carries well in my pocket or strong side. I can choke up high on this Centennial style revolver and it drops deep in my hand and the grip safety is a non issue for me. I modified some Eagle Secret Service boot grips to fit and they work great. The biggest shortcoming is the factory grips. They work good with a Tyler t-grip, but they are rather cheaply made. The checkering on mine started to chip in only a few short months of carry and shooting. Other than that, it's great and generally hits to point of aim with my Hornaday 125gr +P jhp load that I prefer.

I love it.
The nickel is stunning.
The lettering, serial number, and S&W logo are deep cut into the metal.
It shoots .38 +P ammo.
The trigger pull is great, right out of the box.
It shoots to point of aim.
It's a classy little snubby.

My camera skills are weak. After seeing some of these nickel 40's, I think I made the wrong decision. I should have ordered the nickel!!
Anchors, if you can afford it, I suggest getting one of each version: blue, CCH, and nickel!

Mas, have you heard anything about Smith possibly making this gun in an Airweight? I figured you might have a connection or two at S&W, considering what you do for a living.
An Airweight version of this would be terrific, sort of a Model 42-1.

David, I think yours looks pretty slick in blue! I'm kicking myself for not ordering mine in the case hardened finish. That's the cat's meow! Their such neat little snubbys, I wish I had all three, one blue, one nickel, and one case hardened!

Well, thank you for the kind words. I originally wanted the case color hardened version, but I talked myself into saving money with the blue. I think I may have over looked the most attractive option: the Nickel 40-1. My FFL quoted a slight price difference in the nickel and blue, but a large price increase for the CCH, somehere around $140 more for the CCH.
I may be alone here, but I really like the grips on these guns. I know Jframe is having issues with his and my opinion may change with more use, but these grips (combined with the equally classic T-grips) complete the classic look.

I saw one of the nickel 40's on the consignment shelf the other day, looked like brand new and $400. I still can't believe I walked out without it.

I would have broke the credit card out, I'm afraid. I got a GREAT deal on mine brand new; $444.00 + tax; thought I couldn't have done any better than that. BTW, I went through and inspected several to find one that the grips were unblemished on. Every one but mine had damaged checkering, and now mine does too as I mentioned above. Definitely no deal breaker though. Love this gun and hope more in this type vein are to follow!Originally posted by Photoman44:

Hah! Those do look good. And that old box of Peters ammo goes perfect with the nickled M40.

Dave, a classy gun deserves a classy watch, right? I have a "thing" for Doxas.
The original works equally well.
I have a nickle Centennial, marked model 40, and I bought a new blue 40-1. the 40-1 has better sights and eats plus p. the 40 has a pinnable (word?) grip safety, and much better grips. oth need a Tyler to do their best work. I like them both. I second the notion that the checkering points break off really easy on the 40-1. John

blacksky, I've gone the boot grip route on mine and modified a set to fit. Now, I REALLY want some ivory polymer like those you have. Ajax makes 'em I think. But I really wish someone would make a dedicated set just to fit this model.Originally posted by BlackSky:

The grips on mine are Ajax and you're right, they didn't fit out of the package. All it took to fit them was 5 minutes and a dremel. Really very easy and well worth the work.
