Model 41 age

A buddy of mine has a model 41 he’s thinking about selling hopefully to me. It’s serial # 105x. Any help in age or price would help. It’s in 95% or better. And has a 7 inch barrel.

S & W semi-auto pistols started at SN 1001 in 1954, but the model 41 didn't start production (at SN 3001) until 1957. Is there a letter in front of the SN?

Sorry it was late last night and I dropped a 0. The serial is 10055 and I’m now the proud owner of a S&W 41!! We settled on $700 for the pistol one magazine and a leather hunter holster. I’ve wanted a 41 ever since I shot it as a teenager a quarter century ago. I have always told him if he decided to sell to give me first crack at it. It has some holster wear which is great for me since I wanted a shooter that I could carry for squirrel hunting and this fits the bill.

Beautiful pistol at a FANTASTIC price.
Does it have the "Muzzel Brake" or "false muzzel" with the gun??
You can also find new grips quite easily if you feel the need!

That’s still a pretty low s/n with 5 digits. My wild guess would be about 1960 to 1961. Great price too! I’ve been looking for a decent one <$1K for quite some time. An early one like yours would be a plus.

Thank you all for the information. I called my buddy and informed him the pistol was older then he thought and told him between 1959 and 1962. And offered him more for it. But he declined so I told him I was loaning him the money and he could get it back whenever he wanted.

I would date your model 41 to 1958, most likely around September. But that’s a guess since S&W did not ship their products in serial number order.

Your barrel is 7 3/8” long (the 7” was introduced in 1978). You are missing the muzzle break and the false muzzle cap as well. They are hard to find and expensive when you do find one. Fortunately the M41 will work fine without one. If you do find one, make sure the extremely rare attaching screw is included.

You got a great pistol at a very good price. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine!

Thanks for the info. When I told my buddy that the pistol was older then he and his father thought I also told him it was missing the muzzle break. He had no I never seen it but said he would dig through his fathers gun parts and see if it is in there. But if he and his dad can’t find it it’s no biggie, I bought it to shoot. And I definitely will not be selling it, my kids can worry about that.
