I may be off target on this one, but other Model 41 owners have recommended CCI Mini Mag Standard Velocity ammo. I was in Bass Pro today and the closest that I saw was CCI Mini MagTarget ammo

Was it the same, or have I missed it completely?

The minimag target is 200 fps faster than cci sv. I’ve never used minimag target but have used cci sv. I usually shoot 36 gr federal bulk box ammo in my 41 but I have a buffer in the pistol. The federal and minimag are about the same velocity.

You have run together the different names of two different products.

CCI Standard Velocity is one product, the one most often recommended for the 41. It is rated at 1070 fps muzzle speed. Buy Standard Velocity for USD 4.99 | CCI

CCI Mini-Mag is their high-velocity ammo, which comes with solid 40-gr bullets ("Target") or 36-gr hollow points. The Mini-Mag Target is rated at 1235 fps. Buy Target Mini-Mag for USD 12.99 | CCI

Eley Tenex and RWS R50 has always worked in several 41s I've owned or have been issued.

At one time, Winchester, Western, Federal, and Remington all loaded .22 LR SV. So did Peters, which of course was a Remington brand in bygone years. I do not think any of them do today. At one time I used all of those. The best foreign brands are somewhat costly vs. CCI (except Aguila), and best used by serious competitive shooters, I never saw any significant differences in grouping performance from different brands.

I find my 41s shoot Federal Automatch about as well as anything else.
The fancy ammo I've tried hasn't made much difference to group size of reliability. Likes cheap ammo, now that's a quality I appreciate in a firearm.
By contrast, a Trailside I have loves Eley and shoots it much better than any of the cheaper ammo I've tried it with.

dime sized groups at 50 feet off hand with remington thunderbolts in my 1980s era 41

I just went through over 100 plus rds of different SV brands and settled on fresh CCI 22LR Target 40gr 1070fps as the only brand that functioned the action. The others Fed, Rem failed to function as I went down through 6.5# and 6# fresh Wolf recoil springs. It didn't make sense that the 6# didn't function the action, but it didn't. The CCI's were $9.99 local gun store(not big box) per 100. The Smith a 1977 issue using original Smith steel follower mags

I swear by Federal Premium 711B. Best balance between accuracy and price. I have shot some Eley that was more accurate, but not enough so to justify the 2X-3X price difference.

Federal 719 for rifles.

CCI standard velocity is the place to start. It is reliable and accurate out of the majority M41s. But if it is unreliable you may have to look elsewhere or start messing with your gun.

My 41 fails to completely eject the casing about once or twice per 50 round box with standard velocity ammo. I tried replacing the extractor and a couple of other fixes recommended by the internet but stopped short of using lower power recoil springs or putting a drop of oil on the first round of every magazine of ammo. I did buy some reduced power Wolff springs but never used them after reading some reports of guns locking up if you put them in backwards.

Instead I started using CCI Blazer ammo with the 40 grain round nose lead bullet. It is a little bit less accurate than CCI standard velocity but unless I am shooting off a rest its hard to tell. Failures to eject are rare. Like most CCI 22 ammo the misfires that plague some cheap 22 ammo are also rare with Blazer. It is usually priced about the same or a little less than CCI SV if you buy it in 50 round boxes or 500 round bricks and less than CCI SV if you buy it in bulk packs. The price difference between CCI SV and Blazer is so small I would never consider using Blazer to save money if your guns shoots SV reliably.

CCI MiniMags are also very reliable but more expensive and in my gun a little less accurate than Blazer.

M41s can be very picky about which ammo they shoot accurately and reliably. There is no substitute for trying different brands if yours does not like CCI Standard Velocity.

My thanks to everyone who has replied to my OP.

As is obvious, and I'm "blowing my cover", I have very little knowledge and experience with rim-fire ammo. My entire life has been with center-fire ammo. Over the years I have heard many experienced shooters extol the benefits associated with 22 caliber weapons. Three years ago I purchased a NOS Model 41 from an estate sale. I am working now to obtain the information that I need to take it to the range.

I intend to copy and paste all of these responses in to a Microsoft Word document for future reference. When you are older, you'll understand!

Cheers!

Bill

Update:

I am not planning on competition shooting. My goals are for marksmanship improvements and to improve my “groups” on the target.

Using CCV SV is there any recommendation for a recoil buffer?

I use a Model 41 in bullseye competition, shooting more than 8000 rounds per year of CCI and Aguila standard velocity ammo. Both function equally well and have similar accuracy. Aguila can currently be delivered to your home for less than $29 per 500.

I agree with all who mentioned CCI SV…it’s pretty much the standard.

When I first got my Model 41 I used Remington Yellow Jackets or Vipers (don’t remember which)…solely because I wanted to use up a partial box. Hyper velocity rimfire aren’t known for high accuracy but these shot incredibly from my pistol.

Bill,

Are you going to shoot bullseye or some other competition with the 41? Or just use it as a "fun" gun.

AJ

It is important to know that every gun is different. A consensus of what people like, say CCI SV, is no way to pick your ammo. Try it, for sure. But you are going to need to try 5-10 different brands to see what your gun likes, not what we like.

Sorry but "mini-mag" and "target" do not go together if you are truly a disiplined bullseye shooter. The 41 is not immune to recoil spring changes and one spring will never cover all the ammo out there. It flat out does not make sense to even try to feed HV ammo to a 41.

Wolf/Ely my dad swore by. We both competed with it for 20 yrs. CCI Std after that. All were still recoil spring tuned for the range. Guns were tuned for minimal blow back(less kick) and still function. Magna ported barrels also changed equations. All in an effort to keep target acquistion efficient during timed and rapid relays. Recently I gave away all my Federal ammo. I could go on...
