Model 41 auction purchase

Model 41.

I owned a Model 41 in the late 60s when I shot on the Xavier ROTC pistol team. We shot on 50ft indoor ranges. Here is a target from 60 years later at the same range. Twelve shots because I had twelve rounds left. I loved shooting the 41 as much as I did then, but my hand at 79 is much shakier than at 20.
My original had a 7-1/2 barrel. I think I my like the 5-1/2 inch heavy barrel better. It has the same trigger feel, almost no travel, just squeeze and it goes off.
It was $900, $1060 out the door with premium and taxes. I'm happy.
Is that grip finish correct for a 1984 vintage? I remember my first having a much softer gloss.

Yes, for whatever reason they switched to that shiny, plastic looking finish. It makes it more difficult to maintain a consistent hold, particularly during long outdoor matches in hot weather.

I have a 1979 edition that came with the 5.5" bull barrel which I was never all that fond of (too heavy IMHO). When the opportunity presented itself about 6 -7 years back to buy a (new in the factory wrapping) 5" sporter/field barrel - I jumped! I paid more for just the barrel than I paid for the entire gun back 45 years ago - lol. That said, my M41 has been "reborn" in my eyes because shooting it with the 1/2 pound lighter and 1/2" shorter and thinner barrel is so much better - for me at least. I always thought the 5.5" bull barrel was just too heavy. I know some like an overly heavy target pistol barrel, but I am not one of them!

Over the past 7 years I've shot the M41 more than in all the first 38 years I owned it! I have not sold the original barrel (and won't) but it has not been back on the pistol since I bought the new one.

I might be the exception here, don't know. I hope you enjoy your M41 as much as I am mine and let us know which barrel you prefer. It is one hell of an accurate pistol with a great trigger pull!

CCI Standard Velocity 40 grain bullets are usually one of the best performers in M41's. If you ever experience failures to eject, replace the extractor with a Volquartsen version. They are easy to replace and inexpensive. In my experience, they work much more reliably than the stamped out factory extractor.

You made an excellent buy regardless of what you paid for it. I wanted one for a long time but always had something I wanted to use that money for more than a Model 41. But two years ago, I bought a new one with the 7" barrel. All my other 22LR target handguns have 5" barrels so I went with something different.

The new-production stocks are laminated wood. They're okay as far grip comfort goes but I wanted a set of the original design solid wood ones and bought a couple sets on eBay but although they both wear the factory finish one set is glossier than the other so your's might not have been refinished.

At age 77, my eyes and steadiness aren't what they were in my 20s either. I fondly recall competing in PPC competition and carrying a 297x300 average with a six-inch Python but these days, I've given in to an optic on the Model 41.

Wow Ed. That is high-level consistent shooting. I carried 275/300 on the NRA bulls eye course with international targets. Slow fire always ate my lunch.
The sergeant who coached the team always said there were only two things that kept me from being a top shooter, eights and nines.

Heinz that's a great score especially with the extra barrel ! My 5.5 inch was an estate sale purchase serial A5922xx. I have since picked up extra magazines both metal and plastic followers. They all run well. I am waiting for another estate sale where there is a 7 inch. I've never seen a 5 inch field barrel but it sounds intriguing.
