Model 41 Barrel Rib Question

Since the OP referenced the top strap and barrel rib checkering on the great Model 27, I thought some pictures would help clear this up.

This picture shows the Model 27 on the left, the 7 3/8" Model 41 barrel in the middle and the 5.5" Heavy Model 41 barrel on the right. Note how the Model 27 and the 7 3/8" Model 41 barrel have the checkering with the cross cuts and the 5.5" Heavy Model 41 has the straight grooves.

Here is a close up with the 7 3/8" Model 41 barrel on the left and the 5.5" Heavy Model 41 barrel on the right.

Interesting, it looks like the LPI of the checkering is the same. I wonder why the 5 1/2" barrels didn't get the same treatment ? In 1978 when the 7 3/8" barrel was dropped in favor of a 7" barrel that would not accept a muzzle break, did the new 7" barrel have serrations rather than checkering ? I would assume that there was an extra manufacturing cost to do the checkering and like many things, it was dropped during inflationary periods when cost cutting became necessary. Good thread.

I had an early 7" barrel and it still had the checkering. Not sure about current production but I would imagine they standardized on the grooved rib.

Does anyone know that size allen wrench the EFS barrel takes on the 41?

It requires a 1/16 Allen wrench. The sight rail is threaded so when you tighten the screws, the screw bottoms out on the barrel lifting the sight into the dovetail slot in the barrel. There is no need to overtighten, the friction between the barrel & sight will hold it in place very well.

Both the 7 3/8 and 5" on my 1965 are checkered on top. My 1996 has straight grooves.
