I am interested in actually seeing all the different rear sights for the M41. Do comment about them, I like to learn. Here are mine 1958 (7 3/8" barrel) and 1968 (5.5" EFS). I preffer the 1968 since the adjusting screws are nice and big and one can use a dime to adjust.

Well you're off to a good start. The rear sight on your 7 3/8" barrel was used on the 5" field barrel and 7" barrel (introduced in 1978) also. The rear sight on your 5.5" EFS barrel is probably the best sight used on the Model 41 and was used on the 5.5" Heavy Barrel and also on the Model 52, 52-1 and 52-2. Both of these sights were also used on the Model 46.

Sometime in the 1980s or 1990s, S&W started using the same rear sight for all of the barrel lengths and they used Millett and later Keng sights. For a very short period of time, they actually used their revolver sight on the Model 41 and here's an example (not my picture/gun):

Civil in one of your posts you mention rear sight with 2 white dots, but you actualy never seen one. Lets hope some one posts it.

Civil,

Do you have any idea when S&W used the revolver sight on the 41s?

I actually own both a Government Model .45 and a Browning Hi-Power that have K-frame sights installed, but they were done for me by MGW way back when he was still in Maryland.

Here are photos of the Keng (I believe) the Millett ( Ugly) and my 1973 vintage Mod 41 5.5" Rear sight

Model 41 rear sight

I recently acquired a '73 vintage Model 41 with the same rear sight as sceva's '73 gun in the post above. The whole sight on my gun has a slight amount of horizontal movement. It can be wiggled back and forth slightly in the dovetail. Should the little set screw located on the top-right of the sight prevent this? Any suggestions?

The set screw on mine (same sight) fixed the problem you mentioned. My groups would be a little left one time, a little right another; I re-examined my grip, my squeeze and on and on until I realized that the rear sight was moving a bit. A quarter turn of that allen screw and it fixed the problem.

It was sometime during the 1990s and only for a few years, as I understand it. I believe the gun pictured above was a 1998 model.
