As a new member , I have been going back thru old posts and came across one listing model 41 serial numbers according to Jim Supica's book. The listing starts at 5 digits for 1958 and yet I have a four digit serial number gun from 1958. I think the post was typo error; and Supica's book is not that detailed for serial numbers in the semi-auto guns. Anybody out there know of a good source, apart from a Jenks letter.

The first serial number was 1401 in 1957, they produced about 679 guns that year. So 1958 guns should start somewhere around 2080 and they made a reported approximate 9875 that year.

I just picked up my new/old M41 today...Serial #3707....if you read this, thanks again Jim!

The thread below sorta confuses me too...

Here's a pic of the new member of the family...came with the box, manual and two mags...one was the original style two-piece without the weld seam on the back.

Right about that thread. Nice find on the early 41. I presume Jim was the seller. I am to understand that the roll-mark on the early guns was light on the right side due to tooling wear. Any thoughts on that.

Yep, Jim was the seller...super nice guy with a lot of info on the 41.

I'm not too sure about the roll-mark. I looked at mine and it's pretty solid on the barrel and maybe a touch ligher on the slide. I'm sure one of the experts will chime in on that. R,

Flipping through old posts on the model 41 and I find one of yours where you first get into 41's. Welcome

The Serial numbers on the model 41s started at 1401, in 1957. This info is in the 3rd.Edition catalog of S&W, If you don't have this book, you should get one. Brand New off of Flea Bay, shipped $30.00, if you buy from the right seller.

This was my earliest model 41 although I own one serial numbered 372X, and also one 968X.
They are both like new with box, and one even came with the counter weights, in there own box.
The surprise came when I was opening up the paperwork, and out came the original bill of sale. The neat part of that was the date it was sold. Dec. 7, 1958.

I have all three editions of Supica's book; a wonderful reference tool. However even he does not reference the production numbers, since all semi-automatics were in the same serial range. I saw a site where the listing was posted by a S&W retired employee, but I neglected to save it and still can not find it again. Anyway thanks for the reply and the photos; the weight box is way cool. J
