Model 41 Trapper Edition?

We inherited a S&W Model 41 Serial Number 18xxx. The gun is very sharp looking, has a muzzle brake,and I have a couple questions on it.

1) It was in a wooden box that has N3 Commemorative Trapper Edition. I can't find anything on a S&W N3 Commemorative Trapper Edition, so was the gun just placed into this box by random, or was there really a S&W N3 Trapper edition? There are no markings on the gun for it.

2) With the serial number being 18xxx, how do I determine how old it is, and the value of it should we decide to sell it?

Does the gun have an "A" serial number prefix? If it does not, it shipped sometime around 1960 (the Model 41 was introduced in 1957). If it does have an "A" prefix, it was shipped after 1970.

Anything out of the ordinary about the gun?

S&W Model 41 "Trapper Edition"

Here are the pictures. The serial number of the gun does not have an A prefix. Serial number is 18xxx, so based on the previous comment in the adjacent thread, it was made prior to 1970. Still looking to find out if there was a 3N Commemorative Trapper Edition, and the approximate value of the gun as we may sell it.

It's got to be worth $750 all day long. If that special edition thing pans out I think that will add a couple hundred.

I've never heard of that commemorative edition and being such an early gun, I doubt it's related to the gun.

I have never heard of any special edition either. It appears to be a very nice early M41 - great gun to shoot and one of my favorites but I already have what I need. I see it does have the beveled cut outs behind the trigger so it is not the earliest style.

I would like to think that $750 is a little light on the price on one in that nice of condition!

I have a 41 serial number 22xx. 22 short. The front sight extends about 1" past the barrel. Has anyone ever seen one with the extended front bead. It is not a 41-1.

I would like to see a photo of that barrel!!! Probably a 22 short conversion on a regular Model 41 frame.

I don't know how to post a pic. The guy at S&W said it was made between 57-61. But that was all he told me.

That doesn't sound factory. I'm not aware of any EFS barrels in .22 short. The earliest .22 short was SN 19XXX. Would like to see some photos.

I was just looking, serial # is 2222x I had one less 2 in the previous post.

Dowra - That (2222X) SN fits early 41-1 which some were not stamped with the -1. Bbl appears to have been cut with site extention left on. Ashamed that it was cut. Might consider contacting Jinks at S&W to verify if shipped as a .22 short unit. A replacement bbl (correct) and new correct grips could be had.

JayY we should not have hijacked your post and I apologize - I have seen other cases where the box did not relate to the pistol and some where the pistol was engraved to match the box including the name of the awardee. Hard to guess what you may have, but doubt there is any "extra" value to the pistol. You definitely have one of the best S&W 41s manufactured. ENJOY

I can't see the top of the barrel but it looks like a 5 1/2" Extendable Front Sight barrel. That would be very rare if chambered for 22 Short.

It's a cut down 7 3/8" barrel. You can tell by the contours and rear sight. Thanks for posting pictures.

It's definitely cut. For what reason, who knows. The previous owner just wanted to, possibly to change the balance or overall weight.

It would have looked liked the one on the top originally.

The barrel is 5 1/2" even if you add the extension it is less than 7" .

Wow I never thought it was cut down. I loaned a guy 50$ in about 74 and gave me the gun for collateral, no money returned no gun returned. Good thing it was only 50$.

It's worth a lot more than that now, even with the modified barrel. The .22 short magazines fetch over $100 by themselves.

Thanks for the photo's if it had been a .22 short marked EFS barrel it would've been worth an unbelievable amount! Collectors would've gone nuts over it. To bad it was cut down. If it's a good shooter who cares though. I'd certainly be happy with it.

It shoots great, can get real nice groupings. I haven't shot it in about 25 years now. I have others I use and kept this because I thought is was special, never thought it was cut. I guess I will keep it and pass it on to my grandson. Thanks for all the info.
