model 42 classic or 442?

I have no use for the grip safety (in fact, downright dislike it), so I would prefer the 442. I get along very nicely with the grip safety on 1911s, but the shape and position of the safety on the Centennial and my hand are always in disagreement.

If it is for CCW, then get the 442 - it will carry easier.

Otherwise go with your own desires. I have the 40 Classic, a 60's Centennial Airweight and a 640. I shoot all of them, the grip safety doesn't bother me at all on the two that have it. The steel guns are more fun to shoot.

442, fewer things to go wrong. I have a nickel 442 from the early 90's that is my daily carry.

I'd say it's a tossup; I've owned and shot both, and like ALL of them. The classic 42 doesn't seem very popular, like I thought it would be, probably due to the grip safety. However I had a classic Model 40, and the safety didn't affect me at all, especially with a Tyler grip adapter. I'd LOVE to have a classic 40 or 42; I'd about trade my no lock 638 Bodyguard for one, since I carry a 642 everyday.

thanks for the replies and i'm leaning towards the classic m42 since it has no lock, and non lock 442's in this state is not "approved" for ownership when purchased from ffl's. i do like the 442 better as they are less complicated for a defensive weapon.

Given that information, I would get the M42 also.
