I handled a model 539 once that was on sale for $259 at a nearby Scheels, and I was impressed with how well it felt in my hands.

Since I just bought a 9mm double stack pistol at that point in time I didn't pick it up, but im on the hunt for a single stack 9mm currently and have decided such a model will fit my needs to a T.Ive ruled out the 639 due to inflated costs of the weapons.

Just one or two queries I have for the membership here. One, will the 439/539 handle +P 9mm reliably or is it best to avoid? Two, are there any known issues or changes on the 439/539/639 series that a prospective buyer should be aware of?

My agency issued +P ammunition for the last few years of my career, and my Model 39-2 digested it just fine, without damage but at the cost of noticeably harsher recoil. I don't see why a 439 or 539 should be any different.

I think you'll find a 539 is a scarcer item than the 639, although that is not to imply that the 539 is rare, per se.

Your choices come down to early rounded triggerguard versus later squared style (this applies to the 439 only, the 539 never got that far), fixed versus adjustable sights, and amidextrous or right hand safety lever.
