Model 4506 Recoil Spring

Jimmy, there's a related thread on this, found and posted below. Possibly one of the guys who chipped in and has a factory spring can give you an OAL and coil count, but that would be for the factory spring. The factory standard spring is a 18 lb spring and is the same as the standard spring for the 1006. If you're looking to buy aftermarket, look at spring rating.

Wolff vs Factory Replacement Recoil Spring (Confusion)

Originally, the factory springs for the 645 and 4506 were 10 pounds for target loads, 14 pounds for full power loads. The 10 pound spring should be about 6 inches in length, the 14 pound spring should be around 8 inches in length.

It seems that S&W has reduced their stocking inventory and now uses the 18 pound recoil spring for the Model 1006 as the replacement spring for the 645/4506. I think 18 pounds is overkill in the 645/4506 unless you are using +P or maybe getting into 45 Super loads.

Wolff got rich-and stays healthy- selling 18.5 lb springs to 1911 users. If S&W reduced their inventory, they did it a long time ago, as my 1999 parts catalog uses the same part # for 1006/4506 standard recoil springs. Perhaps it wasn't simply an inventory reduction that prompted the change.

That said, the Wolff Gunspring website does give the standard 4506 recoil spring weight at 14 lbs. This seems a bit light to me, the 1911 stock was 16 lbs.

Just dug out a set of replacement 645/4506 springs. Package is marked 14 and 16 pounds. Interesting, but makes sense as these are also the same rates for the 1911 Gold Cup match and 1911 Government Model's.
The short spring is 6.2"
The long spring is 8.1"

Poking around the Wolff website can get confusing. Wolff gives the 1006 standard spring as 17 lbs. Perhaps we should put a question mark behind the alleged spring rating for the 1006/4506 spring I mentioned above. Would the real spring specifications please stand up and be recognized?

I had half remembered that the Gold Cup soft ball spring was actually about 14 lbs. Thanks for confirmation.
