Picked up a nice 4513TSW with 4 mags at a gun show this weekend. Seller said he had it about 8 years and thinks it has only been shot a few times. No marks on the gun at all. Rails look brand new with no wear.

Borrowed this photo from Genitron but mine looks exactly like it. This thing has some pretty nice reviews so I am anxious to get out to the range with it.

Any comments and or advise will be appreciated.

My only “advice” would be to suggest you use a light molysulfide grease (rather than oil) on the frame rails and on top of the frame where the frame and barrel contact each other when in battery. Other than that, I think you’ll not find much to complain of with this one. They’re noted for excellent reliability and accuracy. Congrats on your new .45!

You don't see them often because those that have them - keep them.

My early rail free version is my most carried gun and my favorite out of all of them.

Keep it greased and change the dual recoil springs every 3K and your grandchildren will enjoy that fine 45. Regards 18DAI

I always enjoy seeing that someone has acquired one of these excellent 45ACP compact pistols. You are in for a good time shooting this one, Trooper Joe! Good advice above from a couple of the Forum's most knowledgeable about this gun, and all I can add is that if you decide to change the recoil springs, consider getting the ones made by Sprinco in Texas. You can search here on the Forum for a couple of threads about them. Their manufacturer made these special for us, and they fit several of the Third Gen compacts. Very inexpensive for how good they are, and they ship quickly.

I bought one new and, keep it on the nightstand in a gun rug. It is a great pistol. I like the CS 45 a bit better and have carried it over 20 years.

My new to me Recon 45 has a set of Springco recoil springs in it. After I shoot it and finish testing it, I may buy several more sets for all my 3rd gen compact 45s.

Since I am retired I am no longer limited to OEM parts in my carry guns. Regards 18DAI

Finally cleaned up my new to me 4513TSW

Finally had a chance to clean up my recently acquired 4513TSW.

Really excited about all the positive reviews I have read about this gun. Found out it was made in March of 2000. It was pretty dirty but there appears to be absolutely no wear on the rails which I applied gun grease to.

The only issue I have found, is that when I insert the magazine (any of the four) there is sort of a faint “double click”. If you stop after the first faint click, the magazine is not really inserted all the way. I applied a little oil to the magazine release system but it is still doing it. Not really a problem it is just that I have not experienced this on any of my other five generation 3 guns.

I am assuming this situation will improve with use. The prior owner advised he only put a few rounds through the gun in the 8 years he owned it. The gun really seems like it is in absolutely new condition.

Looking forward to your range report Trooper Joe! I am taking my PC 4513 Recon 45 to the range today for its initial shakedown/reliability testing.

The magazine release button, specifically the mag catch nut, can be adjusted (in or out) sometimes to facilitate smoother engaging & disconnecting of the mag catch.

With the slide removed, & a empty magazine (with the follower & spring removed) inserted, you may be able to see if adjusting it will help when looking down into the magazine/mag well.

You might also inspect the mag catch's edge for any burrs where it engages the magazine's notch.

I loaded up all four 7 round magazines and inserted each one into the gun. Ironically, there was no “double click” on any of them when they were loaded.

I have had that happen before when I inserted a loaded versus unloaded magazine into various pistols. Many times, they react differently.

I did some minor adjustments to to the magazine release as suggested, short of actually removing it from the gun. Ordered a new set of grips from Midway before I remove the current grips (I have broken gen 3 grips before by simply taking them off the gun). Going to wait until I get to the range before I mess around with this any more.

Also, I wanted to let the Forum members know that I got this gun from Dave Ballantyne at the Port Charlotte, Florida gun show last Sunday. What an honor to meet that gentleman.

Range report

Shot it at a local range at 7 yards. Used a bench rest style to check for accuracy. 3 shots went into one ragged hole. In fact, I was wondering if I was dropping follow up rounds off the target so I aimed a little to the left and the shot went were aimed.

This is really accurate (as reported on other posts).

All mags dropped right in with no “double click”. As far as I am concerned, the gun is good to go.
