Model 48?

I didn't look this up and I should have.

I was at the range the other day with a couple of friends and one of them pulled out this lovely, old S&W .22. He claimed it was his dads, and older than he was, which means it is over 70+ years old at a minimum. I should have verified it in the SCSW but I didn't take down the SN.

Anyway, it had a very tough double action trigger but shooting it single action was just fine and he told me he always shot it single action. I figured a few hundred or more rounds double action would smooth it out but it is not mine so I said nothing.

Can anyone verify it as a Model 48?

Without further information, no. What is the S/N? Did you open the cylinder and look on the frame for a Mod #? 70 years ago would be 1948, the Mod 48 began production in 5/21/59, and would have been Model marked. It was discontinued in 1986.

What H Richard and weatherby wrote was correct information.

It cannot be a Model 48 unless it is chambered for the .22 Magnum. And the .22 Win Mag did not even exist 70 years ago.

The picture is very fuzzy, but I THINK I see indications of left hand threads on the extractor. If so, the gun is a lot newer than you were told.

Things that would help are the serial number, the actual caliber designation and a view of the right hand side of the gun.

BTW - at least the Magna stocks are consistent with 1948. That style was used only from 1946-1953.

The Model 48 never used a tapered barrels only heavy barrels or fish hook hammers .

Without further information, no. What is the S/N? Did you open the cylinder and look on the frame for a Mod #? 70 years ago would be 1948, the Mod 48 began production in 5/21/59, and would have been Model marked. It was discontinued in 1986.

I can tell you two things for certain:

1. It was a .22 Long Rifle, not a .22 WMR.

2. The one thing I did check was for a Model number. It did not have one.

If it is a 22LR, it is a K22, but we need a S/N to tell you when it may have been made. Look on the grip base, or back of cylinder or on the barrel flat under the ejector rod..

There are many K 22's............ as in K frame.
22's well not all are just long rifle
The model 17, 18,48, and 53 are all K 22's.
The one you asked about would be a K22 Masterpiece which is 22 LR.
A model 48 is chambered for 22 Magnum RF
The Model 53 is chambered for 22 Jet
