Has anyone tried this, and does it work? Seems like a better option than a partial hammer bob. I wanted to get some ideas before I started a parts swap.

Way back in the day (early 90s) I had a local store so just that in my model 60. Made it dig less into my side and still allow single action use
I just got a 637-2 and am waiting for it to come back from the factory due to a broken hand spring. I have a 642-2 hammer that I'm gonna swap in since it had MIM parts.
Once I function test it for reliability it will go into the carry rotation as my version of a belly gun!
In the meantime I've been carrying a Ruger LCP II in .22 with stingers. What a blast to see the little fireball and sharp report. My brother says it sounds like I'm shooting 9mm. So far after hundreds of rounds only 2 failures to fire but 100% with stingers.
