MODEL 49 - PLUS P?

I have a Model 49 Bodyguard that I purchased used in 1970 so I don't know exactly when it was manufactured. I purchased a new 442 from the lgs recently and somewhere during the conversation the salesman mentioned that I can also shoot the plus P ammo in the older 49. I don't plan on using the plus p rounds in either model but I am curious in hearing from you all about your opinions on what you think about it. Personally if it wasn't designed for the hotter loads I don't think the salesman should have made that recommendation. What do you guys think?

+P does not exceed maximum allowable pressures. If it says 38 Special on barrel it can shoot +P.

According to my owners manual, it warns against the use of +P+, also known as Plus-plus-P, in 5 shot J frames and 6 shot medium framed (K frame) models produced prior to 1958.

In the specifications section, under ammunition, it recommends .38 S&W special and .38 S&W special Mid Range. Thus, Plus P should be just fine, just avoid the ++P or +P+ ammo as it may exceed the safety margin built into the gun.

You should be fine if you decide to venture toward the hotter side of life.
