Hi all and hope you had a good day. I am contemplating having my model 500 drilled and tapped for a sling. Its an 8 3/8 with the original style comp. I want to have the underlug drilled and tapped to accept a sling swivel stud. I have not found a holster i like except for a leather western style built with a bit of drop. I think that a sling would be better and if i ever scope it that will help accomodate it too. Is there any reason to not drill that area other than any value/collectibility loss. I have never "ruined" a S&W in my life but i dont think it will hurt this gun that much. Oh, and on another note, i was running some 240xtp semi-heavy handloads in my 629-8 today and the locking mechanism locked itself. So it for sure does happen. Any input on the 500 is appreciated. Thanks guys and have a great evening.

Personally I would find a good gunsmith to preform this modification and ask about this and also contact S&W for whether this will compromise the barrel's integrity.

I have no plans to scope mine and I found an Uncle Mike's vertical shoulder holster that has worked well so far for me. The only gripe I had about it was the gun rode too high under my shoulder. After modifying the belt strap with some Velcro and super glue she rides just fine now!!

A.O. has a thread on some holster's he's gotten and they might be of use to ya! I'll look for the threads if you need me too.....

Happy shooting with Her!!

I have a gunsmith that is qualified enough to center and drill it and do a great job. I can make the screw for the grip end. I just dont trust him enough to let him decide if its safe. Thanks for the reply and sorry it took me so long to answer. I plan on leaving the gun as is and trying a different holster. I may trade it in on a performance center model anyway. Hope everyone has a great weekend..GO HOGS!!! BOOMER SOONERS!

This a really novel......

That is a really novel idea. A sling for a revolver. I don't see how it could be weak if the threaded blind hole were only in the lug and does not penetrate into the O.D. of the barrel itself or the entire barrel that wasn't covered by the lug would be weak. But then of course I'm not a gunsmith. :D

Interesting.. I used to use a sling on my contenders, didn't really like it much, but that's me..

You might try a barrel band first to see if you like the sling idea before you drill and tap your gun..

Here is that thread on 500 holsters..

I really like the shoulder holster I got for my 6 1/2 inch gun, and the Galco Kodiak for my 8 3/8" should be here tomorrow..

BOOMER SOONER!!!
