Borrowed this picture years ago on this forum. No mine, but here's a great picture of a perfect model 520:

When I was looking for my first service revolver in 1986 the owner of the shop I went to talked me out of a NIB 520. He said the 520 was too heavy and talked me into a model 13. I wished I had bought that 520.

That looks like a Hanks Belt? Tough as nails.

I bought my 520 slightly used in 1981. It had only 2 rounds fired through it post-factory. The original owner bought it, went up a local canyon, fired one round to test and plunked his own melon with the second.

It got cleaned up quickly and well, leaving only a smaller-than-a-pinhead on the topstrap where the blood ate the blue and a couple tiny black spots in the checkering on one stock panel. The homicide sergeant carved his "F" on the bottom of the stock.

Family put it up on consignment when they got it back. I had just bought my house and was broke. Another customer in the store was looking for a S&W Model 39, which the store didn't have. When we both got outside, I told him I had a like-new M-39 at home. We met back at the gunshop the next afternoon, he bought the M-520 and we traded. The M-39 was an ex-SLCPD pistol, which I was into a whopping $85.00.

The suicide part creeped out my wife. I am sure it creeps out a lot of people in any similar situation.

I shot if just a couple of boxes of .357's. I prefer the bigger, blockier adjustable sights, but the fixed ones sure are rugged.

S&W should have made the M-520 in the mid 1950's, in place of or along side of the Model 20 in .38 Special. It probably would have found buyers then, but by 1981, the law enforcement revolver was on it's way out.

I am looking at one this week. When a saw it was an N frame and appeared to be a 27 or 28 and had fixed sights i figured it had to be rare. I am hoping to pick it up for 300, but I might haggle. Lol

Then, there is another S&W Model 520. "composite barrel with Titanium cylinder)". It has become one of my most used revolvers. I was at a gun trader friend's house and he offered it at a decent price. It is a seriously good piece:

I purchased my 520 a couple years ago. I find it hard to go to the range with out it. I paid a little to much for the revolver but it just looked great but it had been reblued so I have put hundred's of 357 rounds thru it. Take yours to the range you will enjoy.

The updated Heavy Duty. Very cool piece, congrats !

Larry

Yeah, and in a serious caliber.

I've always been drawn to the largest caliber in the smallest package, that's why I feel that the typical HD would be best built in either .44 or .45.

I never had to work (stateside) where I couldn't pick the caliber of my sidearm. If forced to carry a .38 special, I would have picked the smallest, lightest handgun such as a M12 S&W or a Colt Viper or Police Positive Special.

Such a great thread !!!!!!! I was actually a JERK a few months ago when I saw one at a local shooting range The previous owner had removed the issued grips and put on a set of rubber ones The range was asking price was $820 but the friend is a member of the range and gets 10% off the offering price Well I waited and 2 days later it was gone Can you say licking yourself in the back
I saw another on GB a year ago It was marked NYST ( which according to the poster indicated New York State Police ) Well it had to be a fake I advised the seller that none were ever marked and AS former NYS LE " tropper " was a slang term ------------ was told I was wrong anyway Loved your purchase one of my bucket list pieces But the sands through the hour glass are running faster LOL
Just a quick PS ----- The range had agreed to allow me the members discount and the payment and FFl would have been under my name
