Model 53-2

Saw an ad today (no pics) for a model 53-2 in ".22 Hornet". I've seen them in the .22 Jet, but never the Hornet. Anyone have any info that will help?

would have to have had the cylinder changed to be 22 hornet. if it had the original bbl. it would need to be loaded with .222 or .223 diameter bullets and marked 22magnum. post ww2 hornets are usually .224 diameter. without a jinks historical letter stating the caliber I would pass.

I think the seller just does not know that the name of the Model 53 round is ".22 Jet" and not ".22 Hornet." Smith & Wesson never made a Model 53 chambered in .22 Hornet.

I would at least check it out to be sure. I suspect you will find a regular Model 53-2. Let us know.

S & W never made a .22 CFM in .22 Hornet, but. employees did. I know of one in 8 3/8" Nickel, gold bead front sight, smooth oversized trigger and Birdseye Maple stocks.

If it is in fact a .22 Hornet, I'd be interested.

Cylinder length? ? ?

The cylinder length of the Jet was 1.67" and the COL of the Hornet is 1.723". So, a normal Hornet will no work in the Jet cylinder! The Jet predecessor was the .224 Harvey K-Chuk and it was made from a Hornet case shortened by .050" and then chamber formed with a much sharper shoulder angle! Harvey also used a 35gr or 40gr bullet. This is a "modern" K-Chuk with a Hornady V-Max bullet.

How did they lengthen the Model 53 frame and cylinder to accommodate the longer .22 Hornet cartridge? (The Taurus revolvers chambered in .22 Hornet are based on the .44 Magnum-size frame.)

I get it, good one, your correct. What I should have said was, they made them on the own time, or after work. Like I said, he made one with 7 or 8 cylinders.
