I have a model 53 22 jet mag. I bought a 22 lr cylinder. I need a yoke n crane.
Is there another model that would work on the model 53. Such as a model 10.

Most K frame yokes (not all) of approximately the same era will fit to some degree. Older models sometimes have a different front profile and sometimes even one from the same time period may be a bit proud or shallow on the front depending on what happened when it got finished and polished at the factory. There was also a short period where they tried placing gas ring on yoke instead of cylinder. (like 19-4 models I think) Those will not work in stock form

But, that isn't going to be your problem, the model 53 uses a longer cylinder than the standard model K frame 22s. (model 17 and 18s). Unless you found a rare loose 22 lr cylinder that came for a model 53 yours is going to have a huge gap between front of cylinder and barrel. The original convertible model 53s did not come with a spare yoke anyway. Remove front frame screw, remove cylinder and yoke, slide Jet cylinder from yoke, slide in 22 lr cylinder and reinstall in frame. Set hammer to rim fire.

I do have a plan to make 22 lr cylinder for my model 53. I am going to sleeve a model 19 cylinder.

For a while Hamilton Bowen was making a long length "blank" cylinder for K-frame Smiths. They are currently shown as out of stock, but if one of those were obtainable, you could retrofit your Model 53 to 22 LR, otherwise, you really need to find one of the rare Model 53 auxiliary cylinders in 22 LR or use a set of the inserts instead. The flash gap resulting from the shorter Model 17/18 cylinder in the longer Model 53 window (due to the shorter barrel tenon) would be waaaayy to big. :eek:

Hamilton Bowen no longer has any blank cylinders. I emailed him in search of one and a blank N frame cylinder.

I am going to fit and install a extractor from a K frame 22 cylinder when I modify the model 19 cylinder. You could turn an extracto down and add a piece to it to make one though. But K22 extractors are not that hard to come by.

Drill and ream the model 19 cylinder to 25/64 (.3906, slightly over 357 case diameter). Turn some 4140 round stock to .03907 and drill and ream it to 7/32 (.2187). then once I have 6 over length pieces of insert with one end slightly tapered, I will chill them in a solution of dry ice and acetone to shrink them slightly and warm the cylinder to around 400f to enlarge chambers slightly. Use an oven mitt place the cylinder on a jig in my arbor press, hold the insert with a small tong with the taper in a reamed chamber and them press it in. I plan to do every other chamber then re heat the cylinder and do the last 3 chambers. Chuck it up in lathe and carefully flush the tapered parts of inserts off even with face of cylinder, then turn it around and do the other end so extractor seats correctly. I could also use my mill and a rotary table similar to cutting a cylinder/extractor for moon clips. Then use a rifle chambering reamer to take the chambers to correct dimension. The actual bore of a lot of 22lr is in the .218 area.

22 lr are hardly high pressure.

Someday I would like to make a complete N frame cylinder for heat treated 4140 and chamber it for shortened 30-30 case that has the walls blown straight. Kind of short 30 Herret

Just an interesting project on my list. I do have the model 19 cylinder and the K22 extractor star, But, having a handful of K 22s and a K frame in 22 Harvey Kay Chuck, with a spare cylinder for 22TCM itt is not high on the list. A 325 to 45 colt is first on the list.

Ya it works and fires the 22TCM no problem. I haven't cut the back of the cylinder for moon clips. I think that clips for a 6 shot K frame 9mm would work, but the only source is pretty proud of them. I just poked the brass out when I testet the cylinder.

My problem is I have way to many project. Need to get the heater inmy Polaris Ranger, Get my Jet boat motor put back together and installed. Last 6 months were ate up by building a 750sq ft addition to the house. That was broken up by hunting season and about 3 weeks of work In Ponca City OK. I 2 weeks I have to be in Salt Lake City for a 10-12 week job.
