Model 57, 4 inch

It has been a couple of years since I have posted this model 57 so with the recent threads and interests about 57's I thought I would post this gun again.

It is serial number S 253824 and is confirmed by Mr. Jinks as shipped in December 1964 and is in like new condition.

That is a fine looking handgun. You ought to be able to take a groundhog or coyote with it, just carry afield in a sturdy, well padded zipper case.

I remember that. Very nice piece of iron. I have its older brother S2481xx and my old shooting pal and bullet casting friend has what might be its younger litter mate, an S254xxx gun of the same configuration. His S254xxx gun came with diamond targets, rather than the Coke-bottle stocks on your and my guns.

Do you think someone switched out the grips or it was shipped that way?

Shipped that way. I don't know when the gun was actually shipped but I believe I mentioned that to Doc44 some time ago and he said it did not surprise him.

To me, that is about as desirable a N frame as there is. Possible exception would be JEH's RM.

From what I'm seeing in the pictures this might be the best looking 57 I have ever seen. I know there are museum quality gun out there, but yours is extremely nice and could qualify for "the best". Any "best of the best" could only be judged in a hands on inspection. I do know what I like though.

4 inch N frames, in any caliber, are my favorite guns.

I have two blue 57s...one like yours, a 1964, and a 1980... The 4" .41s have to be my favorite S&W regardless of whether it is a 57, 657 or Mountain Gun...

I passed up on a 1965 in the presentation case. It looked to be unfired. It's one of those guns I've thought about for almost a decade.

The 57's are beautiful weapons and I feel that caliber is very underrated. Wish I could locate a Mtn. Gun in .41 magnum.
