I put a Nickel plated 4" model 57 41 Magnum with the presentation wood box in the layaway, but now I can't remember if it was pinned and recessed. Based on the serial number N8770xx, it was made in 1981 and according to the smith and wesson catalog they did not eliminate the pinned and recessed until 1982. Then I come to this form and the catagorys for revolvers are (smith and wesson revolvers 1961--1980 3 screw pinned barrels )and (smith and wesson revolvers 1980 to present all non pinned barrels) I think my gun was made in 1981. Is it pinned or not. I know I could call the gun shop but I'm a litte to embarrased to asked them "what did I buy"
Thanks Aaron

Aaron,

If it was made in '81, it'll be pinned, but the serial # is closer to the '83 period (N800000 '80-'83) listed in the SCSW 3rd. The fact that it has a case isn't a dead give away, because they could be ordered witht he case after the non pinned guns came along.

Better go look at it.;)

Recessed but not pinned, made in 1981

Must be one of the last. Cool idea for a new thread----highest observed serial number of a pinned and recessed N frame. So far Aaron's in the lead.

Pinned and recessed 57-0 number N6503**, never looked up the birth date? I bought it out of North Pole Alaska a few years back.
