A friend of mine just showed me two pristine model 57's, both pinned and recessed. One is a 4", the other 6". He said he could part with one, so I'm contemplating buying one. I already own a 6" model 657-3. They both appear to be in like new condition - very beautiful. My question is - which is the more rarer of the two? It seems there are more 6" models out there. I don't know much about the model 57. Which one is generally more desirable, generally speaking? Just wanted a little input. Thanks. wyatte

It used to be the 6" was more desirable, but ever since the states started issuing CPL's, it seems the 4" have become more desirable, though I seriously doubt that very many are actually carried for that purpose. I would really like to add an "S" prefix, 4" to the one below, to fill out that slot in my collection.

This is my "S" prefix 57 from the late '60's-

The 4 inch gun is more popular and seems to bring a premium at auction over both the 6" and 8-3/8" versions. Since you already have the 6" 657-3, I'd go after that 4" Model 57 if I were you.

I really like my 4" M57. Have even carried it concealed a time or two. Don't know which is rarer, but both are very collectible.

Another vote for the 4". From what I see they are more in demand, and much harder to find.

The 4" gun will bring a little more money, the 6" gun is easier to hit with. What you are going to do with the gun should be the deciding factor.

If you are just going to admire it and maybe do a little plinking:eek: I would choose the 4"

If I was going to use it for serious shooting and maybe hunting, I would choose the 6". You need a longer barrel to really justify magnum rounds.

I have both and would be hard pressed to have to choose one over the other.

I like the 4 inch

Here's my Nickel 4 inch no dash Model 57

If you plan on shooting it, buy the 6". If you just want to caress it and admire wooden handles, buy the 4".

I've bought two Mdl 57 in the last month. One was a MDL57 6" and one was a Mdl 657 3". The 6" is great for just plan fun shooting, the 3" is my carry gun. BTW, both really like shooting 41 SPC!

This 4" 57 no dash shoots just fine. But I also caress it a lot, and the Herrett cocobolos are worth admiring.

Just shot it for the first time a couple weeks ago - it's easy to hit with! Great trigger, too!
