I found a Model 57 (no dash) Serial #S250XXX (I don’t remember the last 3). That puts it at 1964-1965. Bluing is in great condition, but it has the wrong grips (football cutout targets). I think they are asking too much at $1600.00. Am I crazy being that it could be a first year model?

Depends on how badly you want a 57. 1600 is a bit high for a 57 but I’ve seen them for 1300 and 1400. The cokes will cost you 500 or 600 if you want to make it right , but then you’ll have special revolver. It’s your call based on these things and others. See if they will take a little less, it’s not crazy.

Too much especially without the "cokes" and the rather rare correct first year box. I paid $500 for one of the first year boxes for my first year 57 and rarely see them for sale. The "cokes" are going to be at least $500 and likely more for nice ones. That makes at least another $1,000 to make the package correct. It'd say $1600 is about right for the correct package, maybe another Benjamin or two if in great condition, but not $2600.

It is in a scratched up mahogany presentation box with the tools and manual, but I have an empty box in perfect condition. My only added expense would be the cokes and I can refinish the scratched box and sell it and the grips to offset the cost of the cokes.

Ok, but if it is truly a first year box it would have shipped in a velour lined mahogany box and those aren't just any old S&W presentation case. Here's a picture of what it should look like.

The price seems high to me, but everything does these days. Since you’ve already got the correct velour-lined box, if you want it and you’ve got the money to spare, you might as well buy it. As Many said, try to get the seller to give you a hundred or two off.

If you look over on GunBroker completed auctions, N-prefix 4" 57s have sold for $9-1500 in the last 90 days... One S-prefix with Cokes sold for $1765....

There aren't a lot of 4" 57s out there for sale especially with a "S" prefix...

For me, only two questions to answer. Do I want it, and can I afford it? Since I really want an S prefix 4” 57 I would get it and have a 657 for sale. :)

Please enlighten me, were the Special Targets (Cokes) standard or special order on the first year 57s? I always thought period correct diamond targets or magnas were standard and the Special Targets an option.

If it looks as good as my 6" M57 S319xxx I'd give $1600 for it, with the football targets. I didn't get factory stocks when I bought mine and gave $1300 for it 5 years ago.

Where are you going to find another one. You never pay too much for a nice collectible gun, you just buy it too soon. If you live long enough it will be worth what you paid or more.
Great point. I bought this S298*** a little over 10 years ago. If/when I sell it I think it will have been a good investment.
