Finally had opportunity to shoot a video/photo of muzzle flash on the Model 57 near dusk last evening.

Attached is stop-action photo of flash. As seen, the cylinder/forcing cone flash is most noticeable. My Son-In-Law fired the M57 while I videoed. I checked the gap and it measures 003 at rest and 006 with cylinder pushed back toward recoil shield. I used Freedom 210 grain FP ammo.
I haven't had a chance to see if recoil is less or same on a non ported 6" M57 or 657.
Thanks for letting me share.
Ray

I still think the best thing you could do for this revolver would be to have the barrel replaced with one that does not have a bunch of holes in it.

0.003" with the cylinder forward is your barrel-cylinder gap.

0.006" with the cylinder pushed to the rear and 0.003" pushed to the front gives you 0.003" of movement, that movement is called "end shake". As the revolver is fired, the cylinder slams forward against the barrel of the yoke, slowly hammering it and creating more end shake. Ideal end shake is 0.001-0.002", maximum is 0.006". With a barrel-cylinder gap of 0.003", you don't want to let that wear go to the maximum and have the cylinder face hitting the barrel shank. Keep an eye on it, you can get cylinder washers that will allow you to reduce that play to the ideal amount.

How FUN!!! Thanks for sharing. I love the gun and would not think about getting a new barrel... now maybe another Model 57 (or two or three) without the holes in the barrel - that is a definite "yes" recommendation from the RKmesa household. :):D

Thanks again,
