Model 57 question

I am new to the forum so don't be too hard on me for asking something that may be stupid. I inherited a model 57 no dash in 6". I was given a model 58 barrel a while back in 4". so the question is, can I have the 58 barrel on a 57 frame? It would be nicer to pack with the 4" barrel and without the shroud would save some weight too.

I suppose anything is possible with a good gunsmith, but please don't do that. The M57 is highly collectable right now. Especially a no-dash that is pinned and recessed. That would absolutely destroy the collectors value.
Try to find a 4" one. They are pretty pricey right now, and the 6" ones aren't far behind.
If you don't care about whether is is an older one, I believe S&W is making the M57 and M58 in their Classic series.

The no dash is worth more and more desired. Look for a m58.

Almost any gunsmithing task can be achieved with a big enough pile of cash

Your barrel change would also require a new front sight for the barrel since the model 58 is a fixed sight and the 57 is adjustable

It would always look like a Frankenwesson since the model 58 barrel does not enclose the ejector rod like a model 57. The weight savings of the ejector shroud is not going to be very much.

If you are going to spend all this money for weight and a shorter barrel, take that money you would be giving to a gunsmith and add about $200 to it. Now you can go find yourself a 357Night Guard which will be very easy to carry.

Or perhaps a Mountain Gun in blue or even stainless for some additional corrosion resistance

Plus you get to keep the inherited piece as your relative originally bought it.

I wouldn't do the switch, but the 57 is my all time favorite. As others have said, the sight difference between the two will need some work as well, again not worth it. Though not common in this area 57's do show up in 4 inch length models, I suggest you keep looking for what you desire.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep her as is. Figure I'll be on the lookout for a 58 or something along those lines. After doing some reading, I discovered there is sorta cult following of the 41 mag and the 44 special. This forum is great, I'm glad I came across it. Merry Christmas
