Just acquired another Model 57 no dash 8 3/8" barrel pinned and recessed in great condition made in 1979 to go along with the matching 57 no dash 6" I already owned, now my search for a 4" no dash will begin. I did post a photo under photos and albums Ron.

Kennyb, I didnt realize there were any pinned and recessed 657s, I am partial too the deep bluing on the 70s Smiths but I will keep my eyes open for that. Thanks, Ron.

I agree. Great little hand cannon and easy to pack, plus accurate in a compact design. After an entire day of humping the hills them few extra ounces make a difference.

I need an 8 3/8" to complete the different barrel lengths. Shot one at a silloutte match years ago and was impressed. Just thought the barrel was too long back then but have changed my mind as it would be great for deer hunting.

Here is my .41 mag collection which has a model 58 thrown in. Maybe the pic of the 657 will wet your appetite for one. Not wearing the factory combats as I do like their looks but they are terrible for shooting magnums IMO. Grooves dont come close to fitting my fingers and they'll draw blood on the web of my hand. Plus they're bringing big bucks these days and are in the grip drawer in a sock. bought a set of the Altamonts directly from S&W and commenced to sanding the FG's down for a custom fit. Best wooden grips I have tried on it but full coverage rubbers are the way to go if you are shooting off some hot ones.

thats an excellent buy on the 4" i have a number of 41's as well and are all great shooters..just be sure to reload the factory 41mag.ammo certainly isn't cheap around here!!

I'd of been heading for the bank or pulling out my CC pronto for that one. Need to see a pic. Haven't seen one in decent shape sell that cheap in a long time.

Congrats and take kenny's advice on handloading. I'm still using loads out of an ancient Lyman manual. 7.0 grains of Unique under a 210 gr. LSWC is my favorite plinking load. Can do a box of 50 up for less than $5.00. Bought a couple thousand bullets (don't cast them myself) at a GS few years back and have a good supply of Unique so the price may have went up.

My first S&W was a Model 57 no dash

My first S&W was a Model 57 that I bought right after college, brand spankin' new (in the presentation box) in 1978. What a great revolver. It would shoot every bit as well and as accurately as my buddy's 6" Python, and I think it was just as smooth. I put a lot of factory ammo and a lot of my reloads through that gun...right up until it was stolen a year or so later when some jerk broke into my apartment. It's funny...I've collected quite a few N-frames over the years (Model 27s, 28s, and 29s), but I never replaced that .41 mag. Maybe that's what I need for Christmas this year! Enjoy that revolver, they're getting scarce and pricey.

My favorite caliber!!

The .41 Mags are all becoming very difficult to find. I expect the availability will only get worse. They were always produced in much smaller numbers than the 29's or 27's and that is becoming apparent today.

I'd suggest anyone wishing to complete their collection do so soon.. Many new people are discovering the versatility of the 41 and seeking them accordingly.

Here is a photo of my pair of S&W model 57's. Both are pinned and recessed and in excellent condition. Barrel lengths are 6 and 8 3/8 inches.
