Model 58

I recently purchased a S&W Model 58 in .41 magnum. This gun has an "S" serial number, and is part of the first production run of Model 58's.

The gun in excellent condition with only a little bluing wear at the muzzle. Someone, however, had the hammer and trigger jeweled. I would like to find a replacement hammer for this gun. The spur on the hammer is a narrow spur and does not look like the non-target hammers of the later 1970's. I have the correct trigger.

I was very happy to find this gun, since .41 magnum is my favorite caliber, and Model 58's are hard to find in California.

Congratulations. But pics are necessary or we won't believe your good fortune...............

Search the ebay and gunbroker and post a "wanted to buy" here and you'll find a hammer. Supposedly sometimes the new hammer and trigger will drp in without necessary adjustments and sometime they will not.

Plus be careful in buying a used hammer, it may have already been fitted to a revolver and may not fit yours.

Can't be too careful with used revolvers; sorry, I've posted this before. Too many folks fancy themselves gunsmiths, and when they sell what they've worked on, they never seem to apprise the buyer or dealer of their mods. The mods are rarely visible, spring-cutting is the least of them. I've read posters on another forum tell of buying lighter-weight cylinders and personally installing them on their J frames because the guns were presently too heavy...13-15 oz is too heavy? No mention of being gunsmiths. Let me stop. Caveat emptor!

I am new in here but not new as a S & W owner. I had to dig a little to find this post. Yay! M&P Special in .41 cal. Turned out to be a good purchase when I picked it up new at a drug store in Anchorage for $129.00. Of course I quickly purchased RCBS dies, a few boxes of ammo, and went shooting. My dad who dealt firearms part time also bought one the same day. They were on sale and close enough to wholesale that they were too good to pass up. I was on a budget still (college and all that, and I had changed my mind 4 years earlier about buying a pair of nickel 8 3/8 model 29s and instead ordered one of them new-fangled things that Harry Sanford was making. Still have that one too. Attaching a couple of pictures of the Model 58, with Safariland shoulder holster (hiking, canoeing, motorcycling) to carry this piece of bear repellant in certain areas of good fishing in Alaska. I had acquired a pair of used grips from a Model 29 when a customer ordered new ones from my dad. They went on the Model 58 immediately after purchase, as I had rechecked some damaged areas and the result looks pretty good even 38 years later. Only time I used it for bear repellant was floating/fishing the Situk (Yakutat, AK) and ursus horibillis and I surprised each other around a sharp bend. I made a loud noise with the Model 58 over the gunwale of the skiff into the water, and he scrambled to the far bank and went looking elsewhere for dinner. My fishing/floating continued without further incidents. Hopefully the pictures upload as I am new to the forums since a few hours ago. Original box, papers, grips, wrapping paper, the Safariland, cleaning rod/brush (new in wrapper), and not shown are the speed loaders or hip holster.

I wonder how many of the M 58s were turned into .44 Specials? Those conversions filled much gunzine space back in the 1980s. S&W followed with their own .44 Special revolvers in various iterations.

Who notes the .41 is a misunderstood round, I don't understand it myself.

Great thread traub, great hearing about your M58. I guess we do need to hear more of the .41 Mag and it works for those who have them. I do like fixed sighted guns but prefer them 3" long.
