Model 581 Questions?

A friend looking at a model 581. This gun is blue fixed sights seems to be in pretty good shape. Any thought on these? Serial #ABY___. How much are they worth? Any info would be greatl appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! I have two 581's, both with 4" barrels. One in blue and one in nickel. Both are boxed and in very nice condition. I purchased both about 5 years ago, in the $300 range. I considered that a very good price at that time and snatched both up. Today the market would be closer to $400-450 for a nice one. I don't see many 581's in my travels anymore. I don't see many 586's either. These are great guns and you should seriously consider a purchase if the condition and price are right. With the prices of new Smith's going up and up, collectors and shooters are snatching up the older revolvers. Good luck!

The 581 was introduced with the rest of the L frames in 1981; your serial number puts it in 1983. I purchased mine about 5 years ago also, but paid a bunch more then $300, but it was unfired, with box and contents. It didn't stay unfired for long. Great gun and they don't come up for sale too often.

Hard to beat a 581/681. I just picked up a tight but well worn blue 581 for $325 shipped. Thought that was a heck of a deal. Been searching for over 2 years.
Here's a picture. Blue 581 on top, 681 center, 581 nickle rounding things out!

$400 to $450 would be a good price, you don't see a lot of nice ones around anymore.
