Model 5906 Question

the 5906 is'nt the best full size 9mm for CCW.
the 03 model alloy frame is better suited. the 06 is built laike a tank, very safe pistol and more than accurate enuff.
also the squared off trigger guard is a skull-cracker if needed. try that w/a plastic pistol

When you say 03 and 06 you are referring to the 5903 and 5906?
Both of those had square trigger guards in the early production. SW stopped making the square trigger guard and 14 shot mags in 1991-1992 on the 5906 and 1991 on the 5903. For some reason the 5903 always came with a 15 shot magazine..as did all other variants of the 59xx series except the 5906 that started with a 14 round magazine until about 1991-1992. The blued 5904 is also an all steel frame but are much harder to find. (At least for me) Especially in very good condition.

I don't know the answer but also don't think this is it either. The listing is on a gun store web site so naturally one would know it is for sale. The exact listing is S&W 5906 9mm 4 SS FS
I would interpet this as Smith and Wesson, model 5906, 9mm caliber, 4 this is where the question comes in, SS would be stainless steel and FS would be full size.
Any other ideas??

What HCH said. I've got $250 in mine. It's an old police trade that was stratched up when I got it. Mechanically it's fine. It came with one mag and no box or docs. It polished up real nice. I bought $90.00 worth of extra mags. So I've got $340 (luckily I didn't have to worry about shipping or a transfer fee) in it now and would have had more if I paid the fees and guns usually sell a little cheaper in my state than some others. Bottom line is: if you can't get it cheaper than $500 in the condition you described, go ahead and buy it. "You never pay too much for a gun, you just buy it too soon."

FS could be fixed sights but this guns front sight is a removable dove tail sight and the rear is adjustable windage and elevation is adjustable on just certain models. I guess this one elevation is not an option. Going to buy it.
I just can't find anything on S&W web sight to clarify this. I looked for an owners manual in the archives with no success.
The owners manual is for various model of all steel pistols but the pics look like the 5906

I looked on the end panel of my 5906 box. The only items listed are Model #, barrel Length, Finish, Stocks and Special orders.

yes the 03 model also came w/this. I'm unsure when was altered to rounded off I thought '96.

OP, if you need a 10 round magazine, I've got one in Indiana for you. S&W gave me one when I sent my 5906 in for service. If you want to pay $20 I'll cover shipping. It's a factory magazine and no one in Indiana wants it

I've got a 5906, & its lighter brother, a 5903. Both are TSW's, which I bought at great prices. The 5906 is not that heavy to me, but I don't use it for CC. Its a lot of fun at the range. The 5903 is going to the range for the first time today. I agree with most of the posters here in that if you can get it at a decent price, jump on it! You can buy a poly pistol anywhere & any day of the week, but 3rd Gens? Not so much. They are starting to get hard to find, & one like you're being offered(in box, two mags, tools)are really getting rare.

Just a small bit of 5906 trivia..the 1st 5906 mags that came out were 14 shot mags in 1989. I own one of those guns. SN TDK41xx. I haven't factory lettered the gun but it was a 1st year production gun. They were 14 shot with a larger square trigger guard from 1989 to sometime in late 1991 to early 1992. Then in 1992 the 5906 went to a more rounded trigger guard with 15 round mags. Prod code 108170, if you still have the box. Boxes with Product codes lower than that product code # should be all 14 round mags. Of course the 15 and 10 round mags all fit all 5906's.
Here is a pic of an old 5906 with square trigger guard.. By the way I shot this at the range today and pt 14 rounds in a 2" circle at 25' combat range. It's a real tack driver.
The 2nd pic shows the 14 round mags. There is no 15th round on the other side

I was wondering about the mag capacity. My police trade-in 5906 came in a hard case labeled as a 14 rnd mag. But the mag is an orange follower 15 rnd one. Mine, unfortunately, has has the Novak sights.

I owned a later 5906 that I wasn't terribly impressed with in the accuracy department, but I'd love to come across a nice adjustable sight early gun with the square "finger rest" trigger guard like yours!

A personal opinion that I believe is ridiculous. Buy lighter clothing, don't carry so much junk in your pockets, lose some weight, or, how about carrying the setup and get used to it.

A personal opinion that I believe is ridiculous. Buy lighter clothing, don't carry so much junk in your pockets, lose some weight, or, how about carrying the setup and get used to it.

Its really not the clothes or the extra 50 cents in your pocket that adds weight, its the 40+ ounces of gun. The gun is 40 ounces + ammo and mag makes its about a 3lb gun. Thats heavy for a modern handgun

Heavy yes, but not undoable. Get a good quality gun belt, and a good holster that will spread the support over more than one area.
That said my old Bianchi IWB rig does a nice job with both my 5946 and newly acquired 5906.

Col. Jeff Cooper is rolling in his grave with this "40oz is too heavy to CC" discussion! It does require a great holster and belt. Unlike say a Kel-Tec P32 which is fine with a $8 holster and a web belt from the U.S. Cavalry catalog.

Actually I do use gun specific belt and a good holster. I dont skim on those.

What Cooper would be doing is irrelevant (at least in this case).

I have 2 guns. Both are the same caliber and relatively same size. Both function the same, about the same accuracy and hold the same amount of ammo. But one is 1/2 the weight.

If they are both about the same why would I carry something thats double the weight but doesnt have any real advantage.
