Is the 5906 supposed to be a single action or a double action?I want to think the one I looked at today when I squeezed the trigger part way the hammer did not move.I will need to go back and check into it.

It's both....
The first shot is DA, all following shots are SA (until decocked anyway).
This action is referred to as TDA - Traditional Double Action, as opposed to DAO - Double Action Only.
Sometimes it's just DA as well, but there is a difference between the first and subsequent shots, until the gun is decocked and everything starts over.

So If I squeeze the trigger with it NOT cocked,the hammer in the down position,should the hammer move?I think that it did not when I was looking at it this morning.That is what got me to thinking,It dawned on me this afternoon and but I was busy with the wife and didnt call the gun shop.
Everything else seemed to be working fine.The safety/decocker worked etc.

Edit:I was doing reasearch after I posted this part and found the reason why it was working that way.I make it a habbit to ALWAYS REMOVE the Magazine when I first pick up a weapon,I did not know about the 5906 not being able to fire with the magazine out.OOOPPPS I shoulda done my reasearch first.

The safety was off and there was a mag in the pistol?

I like the 5906. I wouldn't mind one myself.

With all due respect, please DON'T EVER pull the trigger on a gun until you know for a FACT it is UNLOADED !!! On a semi, remove the mag & pull the slide back & inspect the chamber. On a revolver, open the cylinder and look.

There was probably no magazine in place: the trigger moves but does not do anything. Insert a magazine and try again. And as others mentioned, check first that the gun is not loaded.

Then the obligatory photo so people know what gun we are talking about.

I am the son of a WWII VET All 3 of his brothers were in WWII and Korea,dads only sister was married to a Marine that was in Korea,Moms only Brother was in VietNam and I am an Army VET Myself.I have had some type of weapon since I was 10 years old and I am 48.This was my first time to even pick up the S&W 5906.If you would read what I posted you would see that I had stated the MAG WAS OUT.I had picked it up at the gun shop to look at it.THE FIRST THING I ALWAYS DO IS REMOVE A MAG OR OPEN A CYLINDER.On an autoloader I always jack the slide to make sure there is NOT one in the pipe.and I NEVER EVER EVER AIM ANYWHERE BUT DOWN unless Im on the firing line.If you are in my sights you are ther for a reason.I understand
there are alot of green horns out there but I am not one of them.I have shot,and taken apart the 1911a1,M16AR15,M60,50Cal,M102 grenade launchers etc.I have owned Ruger p85's,Norinco 380's and 9mm,Ruger mini14,and 10/22.Mossberg 12ga,and 20ga.Remington 1100 12ga etc.Just so you know and understand I know how to handle and operate a firearm safely.I had the hunter Education course in 1973.When I was still able to hunt either with a firearm or a bow(I bow hunted 17 yrs)I never even raised my wepon until I new 100% for sure there was nothing or no one on the other side of my target.

There is never enough safety consciousness. Some other readers might benefit from seeing the instructions to check the chamber first. I do not mind if someone gives me such advice, because I know the intention is to assure my safety and the safety of others, not to mention the public image of shooting sports.

Assuming it has not been modified, the 5906 is a "traditional double action," which means that the first shot can be fired either DA or SA and that subsequent shots are SA until the piece is properly "decocked," which is safely done only by operating the slide-mounted safety to the down position, which locks the firing pin from movement and which is designed to safely lower the hammer. Note that safeties can and do fail, and I prefer to keep the pistol pointed in a safe direction when lowering the hammer, just in case. There are those who say that the firing pin safety, together with the positive lock of the manual safety on the firing pin makes it impossible, but I do not think safety can be over emphasized.

Oh I agree 100 percent and that was not my point.The statment was not directed at you.It was a general statment so as to let everyone know who and what I am.I can not stress saftey enough.Instead of jumping the gun and stating to someone as someone else did it should have been stated differently.I come from a family of Vets from all branches of Service.We are proud of our country and uphold it with the highest honor.My family has defended our country with our blood as has others families.I posted and edit in the same post that stated "I ALWAYS REMOVE the Magazine when I first pick up a weapon"and that means ALWAYS not just every once in awhile its every weapon I pick up.After I see it is safe I then inspect it.Part of that inspection is to see if there is any slop or play in coralation to the hammer trigger functions,that is why I asked if there were maybe something wrong with it.I had never handled that specfic weapon before.To be exact I have never owned a S&W autoloader before.Revolvers yes autos no.I had done a google and had found the answer and posted it as an edit.As to the post in all due respect I have no ill feelings towards anyone I am just stating my point.

Slik, the line of Smiths includes many possible modifications, both factory-made and often some done by owners or gunsmiths. So, I think, IMO, the guys were not insinuating that you lacked credentials; this is how I read the situation as a third party to it.

I have always liked the 5906 but never owned one. I have looked many times at the new ones at CDNN for 399.99 + shipping but so far I have resisted. I hope I can hold out.
