Model 60 extractor issue

I purchased a S&W model 60 from a Gun show recently, my first S&W in fact. I like the little revolver, seems so much better constructed than the ruger sp101 I had been eye balling.

Checked all the things I read online that need to be checked when buying a used revolver and some how missed an issue with the extractor. Got it for $410 and after looking at replacement parts I am still ahead if I can figure it out and replace the issue.

The extractor is getting hung up on something at certain locations of the cylinder and it does not spin evenly either. I'm not up on all the jargon, hopefully the vid explains it.


I took the Crane, Extractor rod etc apart looking for issues and didn't really see anything. Only thing I can think is that part of the crane that slips over the extractor rod and extractor spring is binding on the extractor spring.

I would check the ejector rod; It may be bent since it appears to work at certain positions. I went to the Smith & Wesson armorer school years ago and they provided a tool for straigtening the ejector rod if you know any S&W Armorers in your area. A new one should also not be too expensive.

The extractor was several pieces. One thin rod that worked the extractor star and the forward cylinder release. Is that what you mean, I rolled that across a flat surface and eyed it to look for any humps, lumps etc and didn't see any. Would it be a noticeable issue or something you need tools to measure?

I think I see a problem, looking into the crane where it connects to the cylinder it seems like their is a ridge of metal. Not sure how this ridge of metal assists in operation, and it doesn't look uniform all the way around. Error when it was made causing the extractor to bind up?
