I picked up a model 60 no dash 1 7/8 barrel, round butt. R serial number putting it at 1982 vintage. The yoke is stamped 52X58 with a horizonal S under the number followed by a 2. The left side of grip frame is marked 52X58 S. Are these inspector, acceptance marks?

Thank You
Terry

Yes, I believe you are correct.

There are stampings on the Yoke area as well as on the grip frame. Those are internal factory markings and codes. The serial number on a S&W Revolver is on the butt of the gun.

The 52X58 on the yoke and lower left side of the grip frame are assembly numbers. You should find the same number on the inside of the side plate if you ever remove it.

The S on the lower left side of the grip frame indicates stainless steel.

The S and 2 on the yoke are either fitters or inspectors marks.

If you believe your Model 60 is from 1982 the number after the R prefix in the serial number must be relatively high in the 2xxxxx range or even into the 3xxxxx range. If this is the case is the barrel pinned, and is the S&W logo on the left side of the frame below the thumbpiece the older small version or the new-at-that-time large version?
