Model 60 No-Dash

Not sure, I picked a Model 60 Ladysmith for $300.00 earlier this year.
$700 would be my guess.
I have seen more in the $700 range than the $300 range. Condition is everything on the older S&W's
I bought a no dash M60 a year or so ago in excellent condition for 400

I’d guess $5-600…. As others have indicated, much depends on condition.
S&W built the no dash Model 60 from 1965 till 1988 or '89.
The price has more to do with when it shipped than it not having a dash. The original serial number series was six numbers. The second one (1969-1983) had an R prefix + one to six numbers, and toward the end of it S&W deleted the pinned barrel. In 1983 S&W melded the J-frames into the new serial system.
The price is primarily -- as H Richard points out -- based on condition. For my money the "correct" serial number series (whatever that is to each individual) carries a weighted factor as regards value.
Since we're tossing out examples, within the last year I picked up this first-year R prefix (shipped July '69) Model 60 for $560.

The hardware store I worked at in my youth had a gun counter, and I remember lusting over a brand new m60 snub, but couldn't justify paying 125.50........of course that was 1977..��
Probably dates to around 1984.

In todays world I'd say about $500+. I would make that figure higher with the original box, paperwork and cleaning kit, but even without them if really pristine I think at least $500.

I have one from 1982 that is NIB been sitting in the safe for years. I have it down on my inventory as $900 for insurance value. Might be a hair high, but try to find one that is 40 years old and NIB.

I've sort of got two of them, both with pinned barrels and R serial numbers. The first I bought new around 1969-70 for $110.00 The second I found in a pawn shop a few years ago for $300.00 OTD. My daughter said I didn't need two of them and confiscated the pawn shop gun. (I loaned it to her along with some other stuff) Both are probably the most accurate J frame snubbies I've ever shot.

Yeah a sucker like me would buy that locally so you get the full amount. They don't say in shelves for long any more unlike the newer J frames.
What's the serial number?
The first, second, and into the third production runs ('65 ~ '66) had a factory bright polished finish. They're going for far more than $900 today. Aftermarket grips would detract.
Value is all about the serial number -- you can't just say "Model 60", although most shop owners and internet sellers don't have a clue.

This one's been documented here a couple of times, S/N 477***, built in 1967 but shipped in 1971. I purchased it about 3 years ago for $800 I believe and couldn't be happier.
How did you find out it shipped in 1971? Was that a typical delay from build to ship date at the time, or just a random gun that someone finally pulled from inventory?
I have been thinking that mine shipped around 1968...

I have the actual hard copy somewhere in my collection of stuff, but didn't write the date on this one. Who can share with us when the first model 60 came out? And wasn't this also the first stainless S&W to hit the streets?

I maintain the Chiefs database over on the S&W Collectors Association website. I only list 10 Model 60s with a 478xxx s/n. All of them that I have ship dates on shipped between July '67 and September '68 so you're probably correct in your thinking. The ship dates in the database came from inquiries to Dr. Jinks on the Collectors Association (private) side of the forum or from letters he wrote.
Based on what I've observed with the Model 60, since S&W just launched it in late '65, some from each of the first few production runs went to the "engineering department" before they were "shipped" to distributors. I have no idea what the folks in engineering did to or with them, but S&W shipped many that went that route in 1971.
